BMW and M Power Owners

I disagree. I tried to replace my 530d with a 528i in 2016 and ended up with another 530d. It's just better.

6 cylinders make all the difference.

There's a big difference between an NA and forced induction 4cyl engine. Whilst I'd always go for a 6cyl where available after 120k miles a lot of the refinement of the diesel will be gone. Between that and a 420i there's just not going to be a huge amount of difference. Also as I said before, at that end of the scale it's not as if there aren't other vehicles to go for!

All BMW 4 cylinder engines in question are turbocharged.

Oh yes there is. My mum has the engine out of the 420i in a Z4 actually so I've first hand experience of it. It's not as good as a 6, notably so.

Just reread my post.
It's a 320d not a 430d.

My fingers/eyes must be having me over tonight.
Is it bed time yet:rolleyes:

In that case I take back everything I said and agree with the others :p

A 320d for 5k a year seems like madness. There is very little about it that's pleasant bar the efficiency.

Ha! Totally forgot they were all turbo'd.

Its what i could afford at the time.
Maybe a bad decision but it's served me well so far.
Plus i prefer the pull of a diesel compared to a petrol.

So- anyone going for a new 4-series? I get the feeling that despite us all complaining about the grille like we complained about the styling of the first 1-series and the E60, soon they’ll be everywhere regardless and most of us will have adapted to it.

We might have objections, but don’t underestimate the power of new and shiny.

I want. But no. Just no.
Its a monstrosity.
Still can't get used to the new 1 series grille either...puke everytime I see it on the road lol

Is there much difference between the pull of a diesel and the pull of a turbo petrol car (genuine question, I can't imagine there is).
The pull on a diesel from low revs is what i like, the petrol turbo cars i have driven seem to need higher revs to get going.

Pure personal preference.

Nothing quite like having a 2,500 RPM usable range!

Surely, with 8 speed transmissions, the torque and power are pretty much always available regardless of engine choice.

I certainly didn't feel any noticeable wait for power delivery in the 440i test drive. Neither did I have any wait for power in my 7-speed S Tronic S3.

Really don't see the appeal of a 4-pot diesel for 5,000 miles a year!

Give me the money and I'll buy either one of the above cars you mentioned:D

Has anyone got any thoughts on the M Performance Power and Sound Package? I’ve noticed some dealers offering it at a massively reduced cost and am quite tempted. Sure I could remap via a 3rd party and get a higher headline figure, but I’d not get the cat-back exhaust of the M Performance kit, and I’d get to keep my warranty with the genuine kit.

I am not convinced that buying a post 2011 car will get you away from the 2L BMW diesel timing issues by the way, i know of several timing chains to have gone personally on cars newer than this over various models.

It definitely won't, it suffered the same issue in the F3x

I'd likely go this route over a 3rd party remap, I drove a 540i with the power kit and it was noticeably quicker than the stock one. I'd not be surprised if they are putting out more than the power gains they quote. Interestingly they change the torque converter on the 5 series.
