BMW and M Power Owners

Honestly I turned traction control off once on my 335i to boot it up a slip road off a roundabout and nearly **** my pants. Can't imagine needing an M3 on the road, but that's just me :)

Ha, I made the mistake of trying this in a mate's 335 as it felt so similar to my E92 M3. Nearly died in a fire. Do not recommend.

So having run my 428i GC on your standard unleaded, probably 90% of which was supermarket fuel and which is mostly E10 I’d noticed a slight reduction in economy over the past few months. My routine rarely differs and it’s gone from 32-33MPG to struggling to top 30 at all. This seems consistent with what I’ve read, E10 giving around 10% worse economy.

So I ran the tank nearly dry, 29 miles of range left it said, and brimmed it with 55L of Sainsbury’s super unleaded which is still E5. Now placebo is a strong effect but even on the journey home the engine felt smoother to me but I track my mileage and economy through Fuelio so it’ll be interesting to see if I get better mpg and range with the Super and if so by how much. And then work out if I’m worse, better or no better off paying the extra.

What you have to consider, though, is that it’s winter, and therefore generally colder.

This means it takes longer for your engine to reach optimum operating temperature, and is therefore not as efficient for a longer period of time. The difference in MPG can be larger than you expect.

It’s most pronounced with a Diesel engine (not sure why to be honest - I’d hazard a guess it’s because they’re often more dense than an equivalent petrol and take longer to warm up) but it will affect your 428i.

I used to do a 17 mile commute in my old fiesta (each way). As it got to winter, my average MPG dropped by 6. It wasn’t any busier, arguably less so due to covid restrictions at the time, but I noticed the engine was only really getting warm as I got to the office, compared to being warm about half way through my journey during the warmer months.

Best to wait until it’s a bit warmer :)

I don't use E10 but Tesco's Momentum and my daily urban mpg has recently dropped from 30 to 22mpg due to the colder weather..

lost mpg in cold - additional heat being taken in the heater matrix, A/C demands, rear demist,
may the the choice of oils too I remember when I first changed to a 0->X oil

Wasted heat anyway in an ICE. Heat goes to Heater matrix or radiator.

Got an odd one with tyre recognition today. I got new front tyres a couple of months ago (Michelin Primacy 4), did the reset tyre thing and it completed successfully. I since ordered 2 of the same for the rear but from a different company that were fitted yesterday. I did the reset tyre thing today and it failed a couple of times on the way to work and back. I checked the rear tyres and they are Primacy 4 S1's. Would that make any difference and should I be concerned that they aren't auto calibrating?

Probably the TPMS that have either been damaged during fitting or by coincidence just died?

My 320i Tourer M Sport in Portimao Blue will be with me on the 1st March. They've advised there's no touchscreen but a £500 discount in lieu of it. No idea if the touchscreen is necessary, but I don't have one in my current car (GLC) so happy enough with the discount.

Order went in mid October, and arrived at the dealer yesterday.

So, it turns out it does have the touchscreen. No wireless charger, as they said, but happy it's got the touchscreen. Plus, they haven't removed the discount. May give some hope to anyone else who are getting told of deletions.

I suspect one of my rear TPMS is faulty, it's constantly 20% or so lower than the other tyre on the axle.

I've had both faulty TMPS valve stems and also some Neanderthal at BMW put the tyre fitting tool through the unit in the wheel once. The latter was rectified by BMW at their expense but it wasn't cheap! The valves are cheap though, I paid the "rip off" price of £12 per valve fitted at BMW on the M5.

Result!
