BMW and M Power Owners

I see with mine when you have Android Auto running it blocks out any other phone connected by Bluetooth and only the Android phone can make and receive calls. I don’t really want to take two phones with me anyway. I have got £25 of PAYG credit in it which will give me about an hours worth of calls, which will last me ages as most of my calls are around two minutes or less.

I've popped an EE sim in the iphone. Turned on car play.
Connected Samsung to BT as an additional phone.

Tested the music, then my wife called and it came through fine, pausing the car play until the call ended.

Perfect!

Who knew...! These terrible mobile phones made by that company called Apple do have a legitimate use after all.... :

Excellent, calls aren’t a priority for me. Receiving them is more important than making them and I don’t really want to take two phones with me. I don’t need data as I download an internet radio show each week which I listen to in the car. I have google maps downloaded for offline use which I update each week on the Android phone along with any other apps that need updating, that sometimes includes Android Auto itself.

maybe you could also wired usb tether the iphone to your regular android.

(more generally if you don't want to pay bmw annually for their connected system and data for nav - can you use data from your phone via BT/wired/wireless ?)

Wouldn't work.
The built in wireless charger clamps the phone, no space for USB cable.

Sorely tempted to rent an M4 Cab or M3 Touring for a few days with Sixt Germany. Anyone done anything similar?

I have an itch which needs scratching and this seems like a relatively cost effective way of getting some decent miles in an awesome car. Not cheap, but way more seat time than a track experience, etc. of similar cost.

Google corporate discount codes. Sixt don't check anything and there is a massive discount to be had.

Thanks for this. I have a bunch for Hertz & Avis but haven't rented with Sixt before so don't have any. Found 10% so far with LH M&M, but not much luck finding 15% and above..

Managed to get some 3.5mm and 5mm ferrite cores / beads attached. And now the DAB is much improved. Went for a quick drive and tested some that I knew dropped, such as Heart 80's and Absolute Country. And they were totally fine. I'll keep testing with other stations but so far things are looking much better.

You get get an Android Auto box which uses MOST: https://www.mr12volt.com/
you mentioned them before - you have thought about it - have one ?
I scanned this thread during afternoon which suggest they have had 3 hardware updates to fix design problems (bass emphasis, optical connectors, dsp issue) offering customers upgrade vouchers

hadn't realised bmw will succumb to android automotive next year, so there will be the best of waze/google maps - even though I'm more likely to get a 2nd hand pre-24 one
While BMW moves over to Android Automotive OS ahead of its 2024 launch, vehicles released with iDrive 8 will stick with Linux, but eventually get an update to “iDrive 8.5” which will bring a similar interface to BMW’s Android skin, just without the same underlying features or functionality.

BMW isn’t the only carmaker opting to launch Android Automotive OS without Google apps. Mercedes-Benz has opted for a similar path, as has Volvo, but other brands such as Ford and Honda are working with Google for an experience closer to what we loved on Polestar vehicles.

Please cite why you feel this is now a bad thing?
no I like Android automotive (embedded waze/maps-dynamic charger availibility, tidal streaming ) - BM just have to ensure all apps are well QC'd and don't have potential to introduce viruses,
but, bad for BMW because they'll be paying the man, and have less micro transaction possibilities.
Apple seem to be missing the boat , but can maybe appeal to monopolies legislation

e: android automotive characteristics where you have to speak to the b**** car for some functionality is bad though (waypoints I'd read)

I presume it will have some kind of built in SIM tray for mobile Internet access and perhaps a microSDXC slot for storage. Android Auto already feels like it’s running on your head unit because of the touch screen integration. When using it you forget it’s actually running on your phone.
