BMW and M Power Owners

I am surprised it isn't available on the BMW portal, most 540i will be of a good enough specification to meet the technical requirements. I think it's just technology pack to give you the WiFi to let it work

If you can't do it this I'd not do it at all unless you are not going to use any further services from BMW as I don't think it's worth the issues involved. It's not like the standard navigation system is bad.

You're insinuating that I'm going to go down the route of coding the option in... I'd rather hold my nose and do it via BMW. According to the various online VIN checkers, my car supports CarPlay hence my annoyance at not being presented with the option to purchase it. The only packages I can buy online are a Connected Booster Package, Concierge Services and a Map Update Package.

PS If you're not keen on black grills then you won't like the black alloys I'm looking at :p

I use the BMW navigation more than I do Google Maps/Waze now for most trips - it works well, it seems to pick sensible routes, the traffic updates have been reliable and the instructions are mapped over to the digital dash / HUD which CarPlay isn't equipped to do in the F series cars. Not sure if it can on newer stuff yet.

However, i do have an iPhone 8 on the way from the bay to stick in the car for Apple car play.
Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are very similar, some reckon Android Auto is better because of better third party app support. My 2019 Smart only supports Android Auto and Apple CarPlay was not introduced on Smarts until late 2020 on electric models only via a new head unit.

The petrol version which I have was discontinued at the end of 2019 and never got Apple CarPlay. I bought a cheap Android phone to use Android Auto getting Apple CarPlay is not a cheap or easy option. I do not need it I just forward calls from my iPhone to Android phone whenever I need to which works for me.

Unfortunatly, my 2016 440i doesnt have Android Auto as standard. Its a Box that uses the AUX input for audio. the Audio doesnt sound that great via AUX so I dont like to use it.
hence buying an iPhone 8 for under 50 quid to use for Car play, which is installed on my head unit. :)

I can get basic instructions in the head up display with android auto but it's nothing like as good as the detailed junction layouts I get with the standard system.

You get get an Android Auto box which uses MOST: https://www.mr12volt.com/
One day I may look into that. For now, a £50 iPhone will do the job.
I'll have it auto connect to my phone for internet :)

Already set up the mode routien. So when i start driving, it automatically connects to the iPhone via Bluetooth and shares the Internet.
It manages about 1.5mbps vi's Bluetooth, which should be enough for basic music and maps
What's wrong with black grills?
They work well on a white car at least.

car plays uses wireless for most of it's bandwidth -
(I don't believe you can use your regular Android phone as a hotspot for iphone and use carplay on iphone simultaneously - maybe not what you meant
neils, AA solution uses wired AA which is a workaround, he could use iphone hotspot)

I use Bluetooth to share Internet from my Samsung to the iPhone. Or at least that's the plan.

I presume you’ll forward calls from your Samsung to your iPhone temporarily whilst you are in your car like I do but the other way round, or will you not bother.
The car let's me have my Samsung on the car as an "additional" phone. Even with the iphone running car play.

I've just done a test, and the iphone won't stay connected to my Samsung for very long, which is an issue. I may need to rethink this.
I have a spare sim which has 10gb of data I could use. Which will fix this issue.
