BMW and M Power Owners

In our shortlist for next car is a 4 series gran coupe. Ideally it would be 4wd but they're harder to come by and higher price.
My questions to rwd BMW owners are about driving in snow. Are they as bad as people say for grip in snow? Does a full set of winter tyres bring them on par with a "normal" car - front wheel drive A4 for example?
For some reason X-Drive seems to be more common on diesels.

I bought an E46 Compact... I've been watching a lot of AutoAlex recently. I thought I was past buying sheds, but I couldnt help myself! I felt inspired. £1400 very good condition for its age. I've always had a soft spot for the Compact. I've had a couple of E46's over the years (coupe and touring) and always had nothing but love for them. The Compact version always held a bit of intrigue for me. Not the most practical, but the squat styling always had a strange draw to me. When I spotted one very close to me I had to go have a look.
I have plans to make this a bit of a side project car, something a little less than normal, something playful. I am already putting plans in action to swap out the very mediocre 1.8 for something a little more sporty!

Buying cheap cars is by far the most fun

No, North East.

Thanks for this. If that's the case I'll be happy buying a RWD and a set of winter tyres/wheels.

Then do not stress over a factor that will likely affect less than 1% of the year! Focus on the other 99%.
Heck, when did we last have snowy roads?!

Aye it's not that I'm stressing over it, I am just doing some homework before I buy the next motor. A relative with a 3 series was coming over and had to leave their car at the end of the estate as it wouldn't go up the slight hill.

If I can mitigate that rare occasion I'll be happy. We don't get a lot of hot days but I bought a portable AC unit for the odd day it gets too much.

If it's auto it'll struggle as if the wheels spin it'll change gear, in that instance the best thing to do is reverse up the hill, done it loads.

We've had 2 x 3 series and just used some 'snow socks' I got from Amazon, then the last 1 series was fwd and this one is Xdrive but not really had an issue and we live on the edge of the Peak District.

On my Focus previously I fitted Michelin Cross Climate and they were epic, managed to get through the Peak District and along the A6 to Stockport several times when quite snowy

unsure what your budget and requirements are, but strongly consider if a g30 5 series saloon would be a possibility instead, they're not dissimilar money for ~2018 ones, and more of them have xdrive. Plus, they're just better in every single way, build quality, drive, everything (source: I've owned two f36s, a 430i and 440i, and now have an LCI m550i). Also, whilst I thought the boot was big and practical on my 440i gran coupe, the boot is loads bigger on my saloon g30 5 series and it has a remarkably big aperture for loading so you can get pretty much most things that would fit in the 440i.

Do OEM brake discs on F22 M240i have wear indicators or a minimum thickness stamped on/recommended somewhere?

I'm about to replace front and back brake pads. The discs are all lipped no more than 1mm (by feel). If there's a defined minimum thickness, I'll try to borrow a vernier caliper to measure them.
I had all my brakes, sensorsband discs changed for £900 today. Expensive, but it's a bmw indy who seem to know what they're doing.

Front diacs 28.4mm min
Resr discs 22.4mm min
Front pads due 44k miles
Rear pads due 38k miles

That's a lot of maintenance/consumables replaced in the last 6 months, think £2k but fingers crossed that's everything major until 2025. And i didn't spend anything on it since purchased in May 2022.

Even in manual mode?
Not sure as I've never done with a modern auto (our 3 series were both manual) but my step-dad had an auto Scorpio that he used to have to reverse up a steep hill we lived on at the slightest snow in the 90s, the current M135 is the 1st auto car I've had and it's XDrive so the last 2 winters I've not had an issue with snow

Thanks for this, it is really helpful. Budget is around £20k comfortably, maximum £23k if we really really like the car. We originally wanted an estate but they seem hard to come by or more expensive than the saloon equivalents. A well-sized boot area is part of our criteria too, which is why the 4 series gran coupe made the shortlist (along with A5 sportback but this isn't the thread for that :p)

I have looked on Cazoo and Autotrader so far and there are more 4 series than 5 series in our price range (2018 or newer). I did want petrol but there are a couple of 430d xdrives nearby that look nice. The 5 series are all 520d, more expensive and higher miles.

440i gran coupe with m performance package here with RWD
tyres are 4x michelin pilot sport 4S
neat trick i've found (well...read previously) and use is putting it into eco mode in snow - less chances of breaking traction

I've found just using the Automatic creep is very effective on the few occasions there was significant ice or snow. We had a cold snap only a few days after I'd put on the Pilot Sport 5's and had no real issues.

My steering wheel stolen. Quite sad to see so many steering wheels and airbags on ebay.

I'm guessing a lot of these sellers buy these stolen wheels/aibags and sell them on.

Ouch, sorry it hear that... How does that even happen.

How'd they break in? Also what car.

Smash the window. It is really easy to steal. It's a pretty common f series steering wheel. Not worth loads. Dashcam recorded it, but was parked in a dark area.

I did always want to get a nicer steering wheel, now just worried it will get nicked. Owned the car over 5 years with no problems.
