BMW and M Power Owners

In comparison to the new cars, no, not really - it's just a facelift so its still fundamentally the same car. But most of the changes introduced things I don't like, for example..

All the wheels are now black as is the front grille*
You can't get headlights which don't have shadow inside the lenses
The rear bumpers now have huge rear diffusers built in which extend up half the bumper
It has those black aerodynamic mirrors everyone fits to a 2011 320d as standard now
All the nice grey M Performance detailing has been removed
The well laid out interior has been replaced with a giant widescreen which, whilst functionally quite good, looks like someone threw it at the interior at random years after carefully designing it for something else.

So whilst nice low mileage examples of the original existed, which I felt was absolutely right in most ways, it seemed sensible to just do that instead.

All of this is personal preference, of course. But then what else matters when buying a car for yourself? :D

*Strangely this has changed again in 2024 and it's now chrome again as standard

But it's quite clear the next 3 Series will look very different - in the same way that the new 5 Series is very different to the previous 5 Series.

I used to be a fan of the black trim on cars, but I really don’t like gloss black.

If it was satin black I think I’d cope with it. The bronze type finish looks really really smart though, and it’s a shame they removed it.

I think the M340i you have is one of the best looking saloons. Along with @rG-tom ‘s M550i.

Do many of you use the 'Adaptive' drive mode?

I have a full range of adjustments (adaptive air suspension/gearbox/steering/engine) and have been trying it out, but I'm not entirely clear on how it works. Does it just switch you between Comfort and Sport mode without telling you, or can it make sort of micro-adjustments between all the settings. I've seen conflicting reports online.

I've had it on previous cars too, but I've been leaving it on lately and can't honestly say I've noticed it doing much.

Adaptive.. The thing that every mainstream reviewer will tell you is an absolute essential for any premium car?

It's meant to make micro-adjustments, used it on a trip in a G11 once, can't say I noticed a single bit of difference.

They say that about adaptive dampers, yes, but adaptive is a mode beyond that, which is meant to be able to adjust things as you drive. So if you start to drive a bit faster, it'll engage Sport mode, and slower, Comfort mode... on my G11 there's a significant damping difference between Comfort Plus and Sport, but that's to be expected! I mainly just leave it in normal Comfort mode.

It was adaptive mode yeah, button next to the other modes. Is it not meant to make subtle, dynamic adjustments to the dampers, steering, and throttle depending on your drive, not feeling as stark as just sport? I don't think it strictly flips between comfort and sport, but could be wrong.

It was a few years ago now and a borrowed car but can't say I noticed much.

The difference in prices between garages to do a job is crazy. I've got a Bilstein B12 kit to fix the crappy suspension on my M140i and so have been getting quotes for various local garages to get it fitted. Ranging so far from £450 from a highly rated BMW Specialist to £816 for a local garage. No idea how there can be such a big difference!
If from factory you've adaptive suspension, you'll need drop links from non-adaptive suspension model. If, I remember correctly the springs are already fitted to the shocks? If yes, than its a piece of cake, especially on a car where the bolts aren't welded with rust. :D

Non adaptive so it should be simple

Would one of the "Pack Gurus" please be able to tell me what the actual packs are on this car please?

There are quite a few optional extras listed but I am not sure how they are banded into their respective packs and which are just optional extras that are not part of a pack.
I have been watching the car for a few weeks and had it been more local would have gone along for a test drive and viewing but it is probably a 600 mile round trip for me so.

From a call to the vendor I was informed the car would be getting two new tyres and front discs and pads as part of the prep but they did not elaborate on the defined packs other than to reitetate what was listed online. I am wobbling on the car, it has a lot going for it from my wish list. The things holding me back are that it is probably not "Approved Used" and the mileage at 42K is possibly on the high side for a 2020 (20) car which might be reflected in the asking price.

Looks like it’s got the chav pack, m sport plus pack and tech pack at the least.

Massive money for a 2020 car and 40k miles.

X4 has got to be one of the most pointless cars to exist. You lose so much practicality with the sloping roof it's ridiculous. Smaller boot, less rear headroom. And it's as ugly as sin. But you do you :p

Yep, plenty of guides and videos online too, I've done it on my M140i and helped my mate to do his.
Seems to be the going rate, but I'd rather go AUC.
What does the 'AUC' acronym stand for? Approved Used Car?

+1

Yes, it means BMW are selling it with verified service history, iron clad 12 month warranty, etc.

They do take liberties with it though, so you always have to check the history yourself!

Yep, I saw people had to fight dealers to get things fixed under warranty, my local BMW dealership is a little sketchy. But they always honour their warranty.

Came across this touring with M3 body, looks naughty.

Edit:
I think the owner got partially inspired by a F31 335i project with Lamik's TCU

Any advice on pulling/cleaning wheel speed sensors ?- with the appearance of a ABS light looks like I'll be trying that tomorrow, + checking wiring/connectors
Is there a good way to clean the abs ring on the hub without removing rotor (I don't have the code on which one is bad)

So my M5Comp is coming up to 3 years old, Thats flown by. Had the extended warranty letter come through. £932 for the comprehensive cover.. Is that going to be the best option. The car hasn't had any warranty work apart from a recall and a wing mirror indicator that let go within the first week.

By far the best option, a no-brainer.
