BMW and M Power Owners

No history coupled with that mileage, the fact its auto and if the sills are bad makes it closer to a 2.5k car so the guy is deluded

Although it'd be great if that's what all these autos actually do sell for if I ever move my car on

It also has nothing on it above the standard Sport trim too, not even auto lights. Shame AT isn't like eBay where you can see what things eventually end up selling for.

Been driving a 530D for the last few days. I like it, thought the autobox and diesel lump would restrict any fun but it doesn't at all. So easy to get the back end out (again I didn't think it was possible on autos)

Had a remap to 260bhp (or 280) and 430lb of torque supposedly. Certainly shifts anyway.

Had my driver side wing mirror ripped off one night last week

Had both mirrors folded up and was parked properly away from any potential drunken idiots (or so I thought).

Came back to the car about 2.30am and found the bare ribbon cable hanging off the side with the mirror housing nowhere to be seen.

Having a facelift coupe I needed the newer ribbon cable ones which ruled out 90% of the 2nd hand market and I absolutely didn't want to pay the stupid price BMW were asking for one.

Stroke of luck, I found a pair of power fold ribbon ones for sale and snapped at them to take the opportunity to 'upgrade'

Rough prices as quoted (managed to negotiate a bit of a discount on some bits):
Pair of 2nd hand mirrors ~£200
New driver side mirror back cover + respray ~£70
New driver side heated mirror glass ~£75

Oh and the police said although there was CCTV covering the car, the glare from a nearby street lamp was too bright and it is useless.

Would have been cheaper to go out and get blind drunk on that night out than drive...

Six6Six, I am guessing someone else with the same car needed a new mirror!

I parked my passat near a load of taxis one day (in proper parking) the passat is used a lot by taxi drivers, anyway I came back to find my lower front grille completely missing, apparently people think it is better to just steal someone elses rather than pay for a new one.

That really annoys me! I've heard of people taking bits off - E46 sport front bumpers comes to mind.

I don't think mine was stolen though, just mindless vandalism! The way it was broken off (ribbon cable ripped out of the housing not in a usable state and physically broken off the swivel mount, sheared metal and everything) just looks like someone decided it would be a good idea to have a good go at it while walking by.

If I do stick with E46 coupes then this Nexus 7 mod is what I'll definitely look at doing..

I don't think it'd be worth it, personally.

My nexus 7 takes at least a minute to fully boot. That's not really an issue when you can switch on the tablet then leave it but when you're in the car it's more than a little annoying if you just want to listen to the radio.

Plus with the cost of the tablet, eq plus the rest of the gubbins you could buy a good double din unit that would do 90% of what it could in any case. Sure you'd need to cut into the vent control for the foot vents but I doubt it'd make a big difference to life if you just permanently opened it.

I think it has some setting so it boots up in either 2 seconds or 30 seconds on slow boot. Tbh If the car was used most days surely it would be fine just going to sleep or whatever its called for a night or two.

A decent double din that is designed to look kinda OEM are pretty expensive and supposedly no where as slick as something like this.

I can get the new 16GB nexus for £145inc new so wouldnt be too bad.

Does it pass the no-faff test?

To do this it must be able to:

a) Automatically boot to a radio interface and play the last radio station/song you were listening to within 2-3 seconds of putting the key in
b) Be able to move from this mode to navigation software within 10 seconds of turning the key

If it doesn't then its a cool gimmick that will get annoying as soon as the novelty wears off.

Unless that has a built in radio tuner that is a completely garbage solution. Maybe it does?

I don't see the advantage over buying a normal double din head unit, the bezel looks the same.

Custom ROMs allow you to customise everything, no reason why you couldn't task something out that did exactly the above. Logically you'd want the home screen to show upon starting the car anyway. Personally I don't want music to start playing as soon as I get in the car because I just turn it off especially when I have a passenger and we're talking. At the moment I have Bluetooth to connect within seconds but not continue playing the last track where it left off until I press play.

Suppose it is faff initially as you need to configure all this up exactly how you want. If you intend on keeping the car until it's in the ground then IMO it's the only option to get sound quality and modern entertainment/navigation integrated into this age of car unless you got a Pioneer double DIN unit which has mapping/BT etc all built in to one unit and you simply just buy the fascia adapter from that link the reddit Op posted.

I suppose the latter is a better option whilst the DIY Nexus 7 option is more personalised and you can have the layout matching the look and feel of an OEM interface with something like UCCW.

Edit*
Jez the USB hub covers that, you could plug in a USB radio tuner in the same way that they've plugged in a USB mic wired up to the sunroof panel where the OEM mic would sit. Alternatively you just use online radio apps since it's paired with a phone anyway to get data.

That's what I was thinking really, there are lots of very good double din units around now, with or without an android I terface that would just require you to use the same facia, but would mean cutting the vent trunking a little bit.

It does look nice but I wouldn't really want my tablet in the car, even with a custom rom. A tablet with sim would make it a little better as you could just set it to go straight to a radio app from boot without needing to pair with your phone but again you'll get that in a simpler manner through just a digital head unit.

Tbh when you see double dins that have quite thick fascia panels over them it does look a bit odd too. The photo on that site hides it but if you look from a bit further out there's something not quite right about the looks.
