BMW and M Power Owners

Currently looking around for a fun weekend car. I asked about E36 previously and the advice seemed to be to also consider an E46 so I've turned my attention to those too. What I'm looking for is a weekend car that feels special, can fit my kids in and can be used for occasional track days.

Are there any particular points to look out for? E.g I hear the coolant system is a weak point. Also are there any particularly desirable options to get?

An estoril blue clubsport, manual, with sunroof (sunrof seems rare) has caught my eye and while I appreciate they are pretty much just a 330ci with a spoiler, different alloys and a tiny weight saving I quite like the fact they are slightly different.

What are peoples opinions on the 330ci and the Clubsport? Thank you.

An E46 330Ci is not a 'fun weekend car'. It's a daily use car. If you want a fun weekend car buy something else, like a Z4.

I'm the same as you, but it would be my daily driver.

What i'm after is a Facelift E46 330ci, i'm after either the Coupe or Convertible (Want the droptop more though), what I've found is its hard to find one with a Manual, with a soft top, with decent mileage, my criteria is below 75k and i'm laughing.

From the advice i've had from these lovely people, they seem to range between 5-6k for a decent one.

The clubsport is a bit like Marmite, you either like it or don't like it, I personally like them, except for the wheels, for something thats "limited edition" you'd think they'd put some better alloys on.

Nothing like fun enough for a weekend car tbh. If you really wanted to do it you'd be as well to buy a cheap(ish) one and strip it out...thus ruining the car really.

If you start with an m3 rather than the boggo e46 the situation changes a bit, but even then as standard they are a very capable mile muncher

Thanks but it won't fit my kids in the back.

The E46 is quite a heavy car in the way it feels, its more of a touring car in some respects than a track car.

Guys need a bit of advice please on behalf of my brother.

His E39 M5 (02) has rather soggy rear footwells, some how water is getting under the carpets and underlay, where the little holes are to push in the carpets water squidges out if you press down!

What could be causing this, if its left for any considerable time could it start to rust the floor pan?

It is the plastic membrane inside the rear door cards. It splits, and water gets through and into the cabin. Remove the rear doorcards and all will become clear.

I had read on a few forums about the vapour seal at the bottom of the doors? It sounds like a common problem with the E39's then?

I wasn't fond of white initially, aka 'recession white' but it grew on me and considering the spec I can live with it :) Silver dash inserts will probably be the first job to change.

Wow that spec sounds incredible. How much was it?

Yeah, I've always been a fiend for a well spec'd car.

It was up for £23,500, well out of my £20k budget. I did some thinking about the E92 pre/post facelift, the age of the car and the amount of money they cost in comparison to F30's, as you mentioned.

Really nice couple, owned it from new, his Mrs's motor  immaculate, detailed (professionally) on delivery and every year since. Their local dealer who had carried out all the work ever done on this car offered them £20,500 straight up to buy it from them. I inquired saying I was closer to £21k top end than I was £23k.

They were a little torn as another BMW dealer was very very keen and I could see the pair of them getting in to a bidding war for it. They wanted the car to go to someone to enjoy but at the same time could probably get more out of the dealers but didn't want them to just sell it on for profit.

I said I wasn't in to dutch auctions and if he accepted my offer that it'd be a done deal. £20,750 wasn't high enough. £22,000 with a full tank was too much for me, so we settled at £21,500 with a wash and enough fuel to get me to a petrol station :p

It was serviced 2,000 miles ago, and with the warranty & service packs I don't think it's necessary to have a 3rd party inspect the vehicle. I will still HPI and give it another thorough once over before I part with the remaining balance due.

Thats... lots of money for an E9x!

No denying it's an awesome car, thats about as good an example of a 335i as you'll ever find but wow... north of £20k?

Ah well, it's bought now, and that engine is simply astoundingly good.
