Chaps my Disa is rattling like a bugger on my 330. Having unplugged it, the rattling goes away. Is it sensible/do-able to drive around it unplugged for a few days while I wait for a repair kit to turn up? or should I leave it plugged in rattling away...

Have a look at the flap/pin, I probably wouldn't drive it but I've seen people take the flap out temporarily until they can get it sorted.

Taken it out...nothing wrong with the pin. Not sticking out, flap snaps back in to place. Slight movement in the flap itself, but not excessive. The rattle is loud though, which is confusing. When moving the flap by hand the valve makes a kind of squelsh noise. Is that normal...Ive ordered an upgrade kit any way, seems worthwhile. Still unsure why the rattling though.

The air noise is just from the diaphragm and is fine. Rattling can only really come from it not being properly held or the pin having sheared somewhere as there aren't really any other moving parts bar the arm - but you couldn't miss that being broken.

So sorry, let me get this right, the flap shouldn't snap back in to place or should it? I seem to be getting conflicting information.

No it definitely should snap back into place, that's how it works really - if its hanging loose there is a problem

Push it closed and put your finger over the hole in the unit - it should stay where it is

i don't think I tested it properly as I never covered the air hole *doh*

I was in such a rush as it was pitch black outside. I will have to do it again over the next few days. What a plonker! It snapped back immediately when I tried to hold it back, and there was minor movement in it. So I guess on the plus side at least it isn't about to go bang.

If you checked the pin was controlling the flap then that's the main check tbh.

Depends what you call minor movement but mine will not go anywhere with the new metal pin - it was a mess before though with the original pin completely rounded inside the flap so it could barely move it open or closed

They don't go bang as such, the pin would slide out the top of the frame - that can't happen with the metal pin as it goes in from the bottom

Thanks mate, I will check it again over the next couple of days with the air hole. I have ordered the upgrade pin kit any way so will do that, so long as my diaphragm part is okay *doh*.

I have taken a video but apparently youtube is taking forever to upload anything *grrr*

Can only think that the pin is worn so even though you can twist it and it retracts the pin cannot make that movement unassisted.

When I said it should not move, I didn't mean along the axis that the flap should turn in, I meant from top to base of the flap you should not be able to push it so that it effectively moves out of the cage ( even slightly)

There is a little bit of noise from that area on my car, but the disa is fine - I take it the noise you hear wasn't there before / is a clear clicking? Can be easy to become paranoid about the m54 but few chain driven engines are all that quiet under normal healthy operation

I will have another look tomorrow. Upgrade kit will turn up before the weekend so will fit that.

It is most certainly the valve, as when its disconnected via the plug the clicking at idle goes away. I haven't noticed any problems in terms of driving, or idle etc. But I noticed the clicking the other day at idle (more of a rattle tbh). I will have to get it out again and check the up-down movement like you suggest, but I think once I have fitted the upgrade kit it should eliminate any problems. If it still makes a noise after that I will just live with it :P

Has anyone upgraded their yellow angel eyes to LED angel eyes? I preferred the yellow OEM look on my M3, but on the Z4 I prefer the white angel eyes. There's quite a few on eBay so not really sure which ones to go for, any suggestions?

Has anyone bought approved used and extended the BMW warranty after the 12 months expires? Looking at a 3 saloon with 51k on it. I know the warranty goes up considerably after 60k and it would have 70k based on my usage. Do they contact you when it expires, regarding renewal? And do they ask the mileage, or do they continue it at the same rate as the previous year when the car was at 50k? I'd be paying it monthly if that makes a difference.

They contact you before it expires. Every time you renew the policy, the cost is based on the current mileage of the vehicle. The monthly policy doesn't renew (so the mileage is set when you take it out, which will be after the first year).

As a result I would not want to buy an AUC car with more than about 45k miles on it. Otherwise it's likely to be the wrong side of the warranty price jump for your renewal. Especially as price wise there will be little if any difference between a 45k miler and a 51k miler.

Thanks Fox, that's exactly what I wanted to know.

Hilarious white BMW article on the daily mash.

One sweary in there so I can't link it here too many precious people but search for "Government issues guidelines for encounters with white BMWs"

I know it's all fictional, but:

Julian Cook, the driver of a white BMW 5 Series, said: “I don’t hit cyclists on purpose. It’s just that I have a special anti-poverty tinted windscreen that makes them invisible.

Made me laugh much more than it should have.
