BMW and M Power Owners

Given the grand scheme of colour options on offer from BMW it's almost the same.

His steering wheel looks much more modern.

I am debating whether to ditch the wood or not though!

I'm sorry but a combination of the velour seats, steering wheel, wood and automatic transmission just gives me the impression you're 60 :p

Just my personal opinion, of course.

Rest of the car (exterior wise) looks great.

Real BMW interiors look like this:

Note the lack of wood.

Well I did something different today 1/4 tank of fuel unloaded all the kids seats and camping equipment, took her to the Eastern Europeans for a clean then with windows down and a/c off stretched it's legs, sounded awesome went like a train combined with my newish IAM driving technique safe and quick, awesome :)

I'm going to upgrade my car soon and I think I have set my heart on a BMW.

I think i have narrowed it down to either a 120i, 120d, 320i or 320d. (2dr hatchbacks or coupés)

Considering that i'm only 22 and I currently have an Alfa Mito (only 1.4l), i wouldn't mind hearing peoples opinions on which you think would be best to look at.

Now considering i'm going from a small hatchback, on one side of things i'm wondering if i'd look a bit silly driving a larger car (3 series coupé) and if i'd be better suited to a 1 series at my age? (go for a 1 series)
But on the other side of things i'm thinking, if i am going to be spending 11-14k i may as well go for a bigger car that will last me 4/5 years+ (go for a 3 series)

The insurance difference between the 1 series and 3 series is only around £50-£100 per year, so i don't think that that would be major factor in making my decision.

Would anybody be able to offer any advice based on the fact that you all have a lot of experience with BMWs?

Thanks in advance

Is insurance a massive problem? If not then forget your age, and what suits your age. Choose the car that suits your needs the best, and adjust your budget to include running costs, insurance and fuel.

At 22 you'll probably be looking at £1000 to insure any half decent car up to 15k.

Do you do big miles? If so how many - do you need a diesel?
Have you driven any of these cars?
Do you care about performance, or do you just want the perceived quality of driving a BMW?

I'd say that if you aren't doing many miles at all then you might want to look a 130i or even a z4 if you can live with 2 seats.
If you're doing big miles then a 120d isn't a bad choice, but if you're looking for "driving pleasure" then you might be disappointed.

Remember that all of the x20 (120i,320d etc) are 4 pot engines - if you want a "real BMW" then you want 6 cylinders or more ;)

Drove a 120d Coupe this afternoon and my word it was slow :(
Very refined and nice to drive for a small car, although 18s and runflats are rather unpleasant on anything other than a motorway.

I've just spent a week in a 150bhp 1.6 Focus Ecoboost and the BMW didn't really feel noticably quicker.
So there goes my idea of going back to eco diesels..

I thought the 123d was to one to get for a balance between performance and economy?

I thought that a 120d might cut the mustard. That, and there are about 5 123ds for sale in this stupid country.
I might try one if I can find one at a dealer, but I don't want to waste a private seller's time.

They're still a little steep for my liking, creeping into E92 money.

Could always just 120d + remap. But then why not 123d and remap ;)

I've tested a 1.6 Eco Boost Focus and it was slower than my 118i, which is also slower than a 120d. The Focus is heavier than the 1 Series, has less power and is front wheel drive. How can is feel quicker

I haven't driven a diesel in a while, so maybe I'm just not used to the power delivery.

Either way, needs more power.
