BMW and M Power Owners

F10 internet question:

What sort of connectivity do you get? Could I get reddit up in a traffic jam and use teh iDrive controller to browse? Do I need to pay a subscriptions, or can I link my phone?

So...can someone make me see sense here please?

I love the F10. I have an 11 mile each way hoon to work every day. I can go one of two routes, 60mph country roads or dual carriageway which tends to have pretty light traffic on it. Either way I get to work in about 20 mins or less. Weekends I tend to hit up much longer drives generally heading in to the hills (which have some amazing driving roads).

Tell me why I should buy a 530d over an XF or...Cayman. I was damn close to buying one but my mind keeps slipping to the interior quality of the Jaguar or the fun and performance of the Porsche - as well as the fact that it's a petrol as opposed to diesel. I'm aware the Cayman is a completely different type of animal.

Budget is around 20k.

Currently have an e90 320d and I just want something with more power and quality.

I can't tell you why you should buy one over a Cayman because its a totally different car but I can tell you why you should buy one over an XF - it's simply a better car. The XF was great but came out 7 years ago at a time when the E60 was the benchmark and its really showing its age, small screen for Nav and infotainment, old 6 speed gearboxes and in diesel form an engine that simply isn't as good as that offered in the equivalent F10 (tech specs don't tell the full story).

The F10 is more modern, has a lovely interior with great tech, a great engine and a simply stunning gearbox when fitted with the ZF 8 speed.

Buy an XF if your budget is sub 15k as its one of the best previous gen cars but if you have 20k the F10 is a better car.

Which is why I bought one.

Aye, I'd pretty much decided on the 8spd box and active suspension although it's proving difficult trying to find something with them on. Particularly as the usual places - autotrader and pistonheads don't make it easy to search for such features.
Have to say the XF was bottom of the list but I still think its interior is very nice and possibly better than the f10s.

Did you end up with it on yours? I remember you going for the SE but with some tasty upgrades.

Ignore, managed to dig back and find yours!

Still trying to find a nice car to commute to work in, and have made one decision so far, and that's to stick with BMW as that's what I know and like. What do you guys think of this? I need to call them on Monday and enquire as to how many owners it's had and what kind of service history it is. I'm sticking with a 530d Sport estate. I considered the 535d but don't need the extra power.

Panthro, just spend junker money and get an E46 (or even E39) Sport Tourer. Good engines with big long service intervals, very good cars to drive, decent interior (if a little old obviously) and they are cheap enough that you could have a whole fleet of them for the price of that E60.

They are much cheaper to run too as you dont need a dealer to reset anything on them, code anything to them, etc. Its all DIY.

How much is junk money? I'm doing about 400 miles a week. Seen a few 330d's fro around £3.5k. Too much?

Difficult one, if you're doing about 20k a year you'll be wanting something that's unlikely to give you any grief. Its possible an e46/e39 could do that.....but pretty unlikely imo.

I'd almost be tempted to go e9x 330d but theyre getting on too.

Cleaned car and stupidly left the key in the ignition, went to start it to move it and nothing but clicking. Jump start time...

Seems quite a bit of cash but nice tourings seem to command a premium plus no idea what the diesels are really worth.

I can't really see anything at the rear but might be my phone - if its been painted to cover rust then I'd find another, it'll just come back

I might go and have a look at this.

BMW service history until the last one which was done by an independent that I've used in the past. Is this too much to pay? It seems like a nice example, but doesn't have heated seats, which would be a bonus.

Looks identical to mine (although mines not a diesel) Good cars, i just fitted a dynavin to mine to bring it a bit up to date nav/bluetooth/entertainment wise which also makes the interior look a lot better too. That one seems a little steep but if its a good example then its probably worth paying over for it.
