Picked this up a few weeks ago. This is my first BMW.

Had my Chrysler Crossfire written off in an accident and whilst recovering made the decision I wanted to get a V8. After days of looking on Autotrader, I came across a potential winner...which became my new motor.

BMW 650i Sport
4.8ltr
Comes with a 'HUD' and 20" AcSchnitzer alloys.
87k on the clock.

It is a very nice ride and BMW serviced since day one. Service costs would you believe are not that different from the Chrysler. Serviced last week and no issues found.

Goes like a train...the power is awesome.

I'm sure that car drives great. And is very well speced. And I'm probably in the minority here, but the 6 series is one fugly motor... From the front at least.

Definitely,

But there's just something about them that makes me really, really tempted by one despite thoroughly disliking the e60

Never driven a 650, but the 645 had a wonderful lump so I'm sure its more of the sam e

Goes like a train? So it takes absolutely ages to get to 60, has a reasonably unresponsive throttle but can tow a huge load?

Not what I'd have expected from a 650i :D

I never did understand the 'pulls like a train' idiom, myself!

The old 6-series (don't know the E number off the top of my head) definitely has grown on me style-wise, those wheels are really terrible though! :(

The joys of a "cheap" BMW have started it seems, expected albeit a bit disappointing.

Noticed a smell of oil from my 530i this morning, upon inspection it appears to be leaking oil from the front o/s of the engine block, I'm guessing the cam cover gasket maybe, I need to blast the oil off and then see where it's coming from precisely.

I'm a bit reluctant to do this though due to the sensors and wiring around the area of the leak, disconnect the battery, gunk (engine degrease) blast and leave to dry for a few hours?

Or do I just drop it at the local garage on Monday....?

Despite the mess (fair bit of oil spray on the inner wing and expansion bottle) the oil level doesn't seem to have dropped at all.....

It's ridiculously common, it's the cam cover gasket. It leaks onto the hot exhaust manifold and causes the smell.

Replace with new gasket, make sure you have new seals for the bolts too.

Cheers Fox, that's certainly what it appears to be, I'll get it done.

Also replace the gasket(s) from the spark plug wells - you might well find it just disintegrates in your hands when you lift the cover off. Stick a bit of instant gasket round the half moons too.

Oh and ehh don't use the breather hose inlet as a leverage point either when you're taking it off....I hear that can break a bit.....

Have a squeaking coming from the front of my engine bay whenever it's cold or damp outside. From looking closer and also online it seems to be the serpentine belt + tensioner. Has anyone done this job before on an automatic E46? Looks like quite a simple job but the auto adds the fiddlyness of the fan.

I didn't think it made much difference on the e46 as you'll be taking the fan off anyway, might be wrong tho

Edit, inevitably I was talking crap. Looks unfortunately like you might actually need the tool for that one, if there was more space you could jam something else to stop the clutch spinning whilst turning the nut but you've no chance in there

Have ordered the tool, only £15 and if it stops me breaking something/getting extremely frustrated then it's definitely worth it lol.

Did it on mine about a year ago now, didn't take long at all. I got the big spanner from Halfords for £20 iirc. Whole job took about 20 minutes from start to finish which wasn't too bad.
