BMW and M Power Owners

Actually I'd say the facelift is indeed noticeably better engine wise. It just feels that little bit sharper in terms of throttle response and obviously has a bit more power (though unless you had them side by side ultimately I don't think you'd be able to really prove it). I wouldn't say it was particularly worth seeking one out for thousands of pounds extra, but a nice to have

Possibly, it returned low double figure MPG (circa 15/17), revved much less and felt dull compared to a facelift, made my buying decision very simple.

I thrash the pants of mine all the time and the mpg is stuck solid at 24.7, I did an angelic run to manchester (55mph) and just managed 40mpg and over 500 miles from the tank I challenge anyone to get more than that. From what I've read the 3.0i can't get anything like that.

maybe I'm wrong, but ignorance is bliss :p

I think it was broken!

I owned both the prefacelift 3.0i and the 3.0si and it wasn't that different to be honest. Both were good mpg wise, and both pretty crashy. The 3.0i could certainly hit 40mpg on a run too :)

I believe the biggest improvement was that on the facelift, was they solved the roof motor problem. In hindsight sticking the electric motor down at the bottom of the drainage system for the car probably wasn't the best idea. Pretty sure they made it watertight in the facelift.

That's what I wondered, but why? It's not much more powerful and it isn't anything like as compatible with the car. surely a 3 litre M54 is better.

Are the M52B28's not the better base for turbo/super charging? I could be mistaken but I vaguely remember reading them being easier to charge.

I went from a pre-facelift 2.5i to a 3.0si and the difference was obvious - but then with 70 bhp more you'd expect it to be! The torque I think is the biggest difference - I used to ring the 2.5 out to 6.5k rpm far more than the 3.0 which feels ample at ~4-5k. I find the ride ok on the sport suspension, but then my old one had done 110k miles and probably needed new dampers...

As for fuel economy, I can't get better than ~24-25mpg in the Coupe whereas the same journeys were returning 27-29mpg in the roadster. Then again I haven't done any motorway jaunts yet so that hasn't dragged the average up.

They only kind-of fixed the motor problem - it's in exactly the same place, just in a bag, which over time doesn't prevent water getting in, although it's still better than the pre-facelift.

Would there be fluid if so? As there's none at the moment. There was a weird 'clunk' sound, and then I could barely move the steering wheel. I'm in a bloody car park with height restrictions so the AA themselves can't come out.

If there is no fluid the pump is probably fine, you probably just have a burst hose or something and have dumped all the fluid (it's very high pressure so it can burst as a system)

Btw you can still drive the car with no pas....you don't need the aa :p

I'm in a car park with a really tight exit that goes round and round. I wouldn't be able to get out.

As soon as the car is moving it will be manageable, just treat it like a non pas car. I drove a 2 tonne s-class for about a week with no pas, trust me a little 3 series will be perfectly drivable :)

+1

Even my little Fiesta RST felt like a challenger tank until it was moving.

I've driven my Scania without PAS, it was unbelievably heavy to try to move the wheel when stationary but once moving, surprisingly manageable!

Iirc pas is slightly heavier to move about when its broken than non assisted steering, but as above it's perfectly manageable once you're used to the crawling speed weight

It was the pump, thanks for the advice guys. Went on the back of the bed in the end. Powered steering cars without PAS are worse than without it at all. Had to crawl out of the car park in shame.

The M44 that is currently in the car is only 140bhp

the M52 is 192bhp ... its pretty much a straight swap.

Engine
Loom
ECU
gearbox
Rear diff

all just straight swap parts.

not sure how its not compatible with the car when the m52 comes in every E36 328 sport?

If S52 m3 engines where not 2k + id do that swap..

but for around £600 its well worth the swap to the M52
