BMW and M Power Owners

With 3 occupants and a weekend's worth of luggage.
That too! And my combined when new was only 41.4 MPG...
It is supposed to be a big step forward too, higher power than the old 335d but more mpg than the old 330d.
It has 28 HP and 20 Nm less than the old 335d :)
That was my plan with the lease company, but the 530d is out of my range and so I can't test drive one through them.
I'm sure if you speak to a human and explain the situation they'll arrange a test for you!

In terms of 328i vs. 330d, it will be a tough call. I'm in the same boat as Fox; Petrol > Diesel, but 6 cyl > 4 cyl. The 328i is technologically great, but I suspect a bit dull... which is saying something when we are comparing it to a diesel, but the 330d engine is one of the best diesels out there. The idea of an 8-speed automatic 330d with a tuning box pushing over 300 HP sounds fun - it'll be like my 535d in ease of acceleration. On a warm, dry day you'd maybe even see a 4.x 0-60 time from it, which is frankly mental.

Not sure where I got my 335d figures from then - apologies. May have been a conclusion I drew by comparing the 0-60 times being a fraction slower on the old 335d but the new box / ratios and lower weight will account for that.

If the trim levels were identical I'd be going for the 330d. I've been in a Diesel for the last 3 years and am used to the downsides now. But it's the fact that the M Sport trim is so nice but is only an option for me with the 28i that makes this a tricky one :)

RE: 28i being a bit dull, again I've seen that in reviews, but only when people are comparing it to the 6 pots. As a stand alone (i.e. in comparison to other 4 pot turbos) the power/mpg/co2 combination is probably the best in the world right now. I'm also coming from a Golf GTD (168hp/45mpg/138 CO2) so the 28i should be better in all regards.

First mistake of car buying: "it's better than what I have!" :D

But I agree, if I had to choose a 4 cylinder engine for a normal car it'd probably be the 328i engine.

I did used to drive a 5 pot turbo (Focus ST) and it was a cracking engine. Looks like a 328i test drive is what this is boiling down to... :)

As ever, ignore foofighter as not much he says makes sense or is even truthful. He hasn't had a new 330d at all. They are not available as a manual.

You really do tickle me sometimes Foxy.

You have just said "Ignore f00f1ght0r as he tells porkies" yet in the very same post, reiterated exactly what I had said in my earlier post.

It is worth noting that the swanky new 330Ds do not come in manual (so could very well offer even worse MPG than I stated), however, the new 330D that I had on loan was the 61-plate but still equipped with the same N57 engine, just about 60BHP less than the brand new vehicle. And as we all should have learnt by now, performance comes at a price to MPG.

Next time you decide to act as the officious Mr Fox, I suggest you get out there with your wallet, treat yourself to a brand new vehicle and then the Dealers may treat you to nicer loan cars where you yourself can drive these very vehicles, without having to rely on months of fawning over Wikipedia making copious notes and regurgitating them without the validation of experiencing these very-same vehicles for days/weeks at a time.

You have not driven the new 330d in manual guise. It is not offered in manual guise. The end pretty much?

I told him to ignore you after he posted 'Hi, are you sure this was the new one?', given of course that the answer to that question was a resounding 'No'.

however, the new 330D that I had on loan was the 61-plate

So you didn't even drive an F30, you drove an E9x, a previous generation car. So my point was entirely correct!

You were wrong and misleading when you told everyone you'd had a new 330d as a loaner in a conversation about the F30 330d, and then went on to advise him on the purchase of an F30 based on this loaner experience, when it turns out you drove the previous model!

but still equipped with the same N57 engine

Not the same variant, no.

And as we all should have learnt by now, performance comes at a price to MPG.

So you think the new F30 330d will be less efficient than an E90 330d because it has more power?

I guess by this stunning peice of logic the most economical of all 330d's is the 2001 E46 330d with 184bhp?

:D

I like this bit best.

One question I would be interested in knowing is what loaners have we had from which dealerships.

If you include your own car - the dealership - what it was in for - loaner .

E92 M3 2011 - Halliwell Jones - Service - BMW 118d
E92 M3 2011 - Halliwell Jones - Service - BMW 118

This might make some interesting reading as I suspect it's not like f00f1ght0r posted.

ps if you think there is a better format, please feel free to change it

In 99% of road circumstances my 530d has more than enough power for what I need it to do and I fail to see where you would need more. It cruises all day long at big speeds, gets there effortlessly and when you stir the box it has loads of get up and get around ability. Sure I miss the ability to go around 10 cars in a row (which I really don't NEED to do) but it will do 4 or 5 effortlessly and more importantly safely and the way it pulls up to 150mph (Brunters of course...) is amazing for such a big lump.

...and in the wet I find myself always turning off the traction control as it is such an easy car to get sideways and hold there looking like a hero, of course assuming you have it in manual change so it doesn't decide to swap a gear just as you're getting all Mario Andretti

To be fair, most people who own their cars usually do say, it's all they need on the UK roads, anything more is unnecessary as my current car does the job perfectly fine, Anything more would be wasted..

You have the manufacturers product code and you know the manufacturer.

Can you seriously not work this out...?Here is a hint..

Dealer.
No need to sound like a wise ass, I did think about the dealer but some people tend to work during the week and I'm not taking half a day off for some bloody clips.
Here's a hint for you as well: "preferably online".

But my previous cars have been RS4, GT3, M3, M3, Griffith 500 so perhaps my perspective is realistic...

I used to ask for cars to try from BMW and usually got them. I also never got precious about loan cars after a while, just wanted something that made life easy so wasn't that bothered but usually I got a 5 series or 3 series when I had my M3's but also asked for Mini Coops and X5's and got them too over time when I wanted to try different options.

Best loaner I have had was a 530d. Normally its a 320d, have had a 325d on occasion. Lots of 120d and 118d too. Worst I ever had was ironically when I took the 335i in and got a 116d :D

Re: 328i vs 330d, i think whichever car you buy you'll be thinking I should have got the other one.
Personally I would get the 328i, the M Sport looks so much better than the standard versions and being petrol it will be noticeably smoother.

You're probably right there :)

Anyone got any knowledge/experience of what the F30 328i gets in real world MPG? My driving is mainly motorway..

I'd get the 330d because I genuinely think it has a better engine+gearbox combo.
The diesel is probably one of the best diesel 6pots out there whereas the petrol is a good 4 pot. As for the tractor noise, this will only be really obvious when you start the car from cold with your door open, under normal cruising conditions I doubt there will be much difference.
The 8 speed gearbox makes sure you are always on the right power band and never "run out of revs" + while the extra torque and better fuel economy are nice bonuses.

No one needs anything more than a 60bhp Fiesta. :)

BMW fail at courtesy cars, I took in a 335i and they give me a 120d.

I took my 911 into Porsche and they gave me a 2012 C2S cab and a New boxer the other time. I loved the PDK so much that Im going to change my car when I can afford it.

Maybe if BMW had given me a M3, 135i, 650i or something nice it may make me want to buy a new car:confused:
