BMW and M Power Owners

Quick question for the F10 owners. Just opened the boot to find the plastic box on the right hand side filled with water (see image below). Anyone ever seen anything like this or what could have caused it?

Clearly some sort of water ingress from the rain, and rather worrying considering the fuse box is above the container!

Yeah, I've seen it. Pay attention when you open the boot lid. The water drips in to the boot from the top of the lights. Really stupid design but only does it if there's standing water in there.

Mine does that too but not in sufficient quantity to create a puddle like that.

Thanks - suspect it may be slightly exacerbated by the combination of the bootlid spoiler keeping more water in place and the fact that I tend to use the boots auto open/close functionality so I'm rarely standing at the boot! Will have to watch out for this in future when the boot is likely to have standing water. Rather annoying design flaw on an otherwise pretty lovely car.

It's bizarre. It is is a common thing on the E46 Saloon and Coupe but they revised the boot on the convertible and I've not seen rain water drop in when opening the boot.

You'd think BMW would pay attention to later model cars instead of forget this rather comedy oversight!

So I will be moving out of London in the next week or so and going to be needing something to replace my old 323ci which died a death last summer.

Any thoughts on this?

With all this talk of m3's floating around I was pretty keen on trying pick one up, but I would have to borrow money to buy a decent one. So, I'm looking to run something cheaper like a 330ci for a year or so.

When an advert mentions "service history", rather than FSH I'm assuming there are likely to be some gaps?

I've never owned a manual before but actually quite fancy one.

Indeed, I would read that as "there's a book here with some stamps in it at some point"

For that fog light that's missing alone I'm very put off that car.

Then I look at the minging footprints inside and my gut feeling is it's a 2 grand shed

Ah I never even noticed this missing fog. The perils of browsing on a phone screen!

Bit of grime I'm not too bothered about. I live on a farm so chances are I will jump in at some point with boots on. That's my favourite coloured interior but probably also the least suitable!

Is there much chance of picking up anything decent around this price point?

Who was it looking to get rid of their 330 a couple pages ago?? ;)

Computer is broken on that one too isnt it? (Hence the teletext look display)

Not sure I've never actually seen one of those units in person before. Looks like may have been reset after a dead battery or something?

If it works are the official units actually worth anything? Would probably look to replace it with one of those Chinese android ones.

I've managed to lose the software for reading codes from my E46, I've got the USB to round plug adapter, does anyone know where I could download the fault finding/ programming software perchance?

It can be downloaded - INPA is easily available but drop me a PM if not and I'll point you in the right place.

That teletext like display on that 330ci is probably down to a faulty/missing MK4 nav unit. If it's broken or missing, the TV tuner takes over the display and you get that funny looking display.

I was, but it was a touring, and an SE.

Gents, I want to do the following to my 330d Touring to freshen it up a little bit, can you advise me on where to buy the parts?

Clean the MAF - what cleaning product should I use?
New oil breather pipe/filter - where do I buy this from?]
Remove the swirl flaps - where do I buy the blanking plates from?
New front and rear trailing arm bushes - where do I buy these from, I just want to stick with OEM or near enough OEM.

Are there any other things I could do in the mean time?

Also, if any of your E46 Touring owners have noticed your rear windscreen heater has stopped working, check where the rubber seals contacts with the window? I checked yesterday and the prolonged contact has rubbed away all the heater elements. The only fix is a new rear screen, or using some electrical contact paste, which is more hassle than it's worth.

MAF - You can clean with electrical contact cleaner.
Oil breather - ECP? eBay?
Swirl flap blanks - Ebay
Trailing arm bushes - ECP?

You can clean the MAF with electrical contact cleaner - I'm not sold on how long it'll last though if it's already playing up. Replacements are thankfully not too expensive.

Oil breather pipe might not be too expensive from BMW, but C3BMW sell them too.

Trailing arm bushes can be had from Euro Car Parts/GSF if you wanted. You'll need a press to push them back in, or you could go Poly and get some Powerflex ones - but obviously the ride will suffer a little if you went this route.

Having a bit of a change of mind...

Considering an E39 M5 instead of the V10 the more I read the more I'm put off you can get an E39 for peanuts I absoloutely love my cheap E39 because of how refined it feels therefore could an E39 M5 be a good swap from my M3?

A better cruiser and still performs the same but more low down grunt

You can't get an E39 for peanuts, the good ones are E60 money now. You can find some advertised for peanuts but they are trash and its the wrong way to approach ownership.
