BMW and M Power Owners

So run flats? My 530d has them (had it just over a week) and a pressure warning came up just now and it wants me to drive so it can diagnos it (cant as im at work now) i imagine this will continue when i leave work?

Whats peoples thoughts on run flats? Is it worth just replacing them for normal ones? Does this warning mean the tyre is gone or could it just be due to a bump in the road or something?

Sorry for my ignorance on this lol

I prefer run flats. Had a puncture this week actually and you can drive around on them until you get it sorted. If your car has room for a spare wheel then go for normal tyres if you prefer a softer ride. When was the last time you topped up the air pressure in your tyres and reset the pressures in your idrive?

I wouldn't stick with runflats... they're more expensive and give a harsher ride. Switch to normal tyres and you'll notice quite a few extra bumps soaked up.

Most things that a runflat would protect from can be filled with a can of tyre sealant... so I keep one of those in the boot.

You can't drive around until you can get it sorted, you can complete a journey of up to 50 miles at reduced speed after which time you must throw the tyre in the bin. They are awful - gf got a puncture in hers, couldn't get it repaired, ended up needing a brand new tyre for a simple screw in the centre tread that would have been an easy 10 quid fix on a proper tyre.

There's a big market for them because BMW insist on using them for all their cars. On my Mini they were awful but on my 3 series they're fine, I suppose due to better configured suspension, again on the X3 though they feel a little harsh.

They exist because manufacturers force them on us to save weight and costs in the pursuit of emissions targets not because they are a stunning product.

Anyone know of any known issues with the E46 330i's? Looking at one for the next motor and haven't registered on the Bimmer forum yet... thought I'd ask here to see if there's any owner experience?

What could I expect to pay for a below average mileage 330i? 2003 onwards preferably. I'd be coming from a mk4 Golf tdi, so expect anything to be a step in the right direction ;)

As above guys only had it for just over a week so i imagine the pressures would have been ok but could that be it? A change in pressure causing a warning? Or does it mean the tyre is done for? As i said not diagnosed it yet as i havent drove since getting to work tday

Depends on what spec and history you are looking for.

And for this age, don't buy purely on mileage.

You may have a 2005 330i that's done 60k harsh miles with rotting bushes that hasn't been well looked after.

VS a 2002 330i with over 100k miles that's been looked after by main dealer and specialist, with the rubber all replaced and shocks refurbed or replaced not too long ago.

Just to give you an idea anyway...

The engines go on for a long time if they've been well looked after... it's more likely for the rest of the car to fall apart around it.

It could be that the place you got it from didn't keep the tyre pressure up / didn't check before handover.

Or did the dodgy dealer thing of lowering the pressures to make the car feel like it has a softer ride than it really does.

Check that the pressures match up with the sticker on the inside of the drivers door.

You should check your pressures every two weeks...

Be careful buying one of these, im honestly not sure i'd bother running one any more. I did for 10k miles over a few months earlier this year and while i appreciate 10k miles in space of time is a lot, they generate endless little niggles. Silly stuff like llambda sensors and air bag sensors creating error lights.

Biggest issues;
- Rust, everywhere, especially arches
- Cooling system, Radiator, Expansion tank especially.
- General age of suspension, creaks, sloppyness
- Handbrakes are usually terrible, i had to have mine overhauled to pass MOT

Great cars....back in the 2000's

I have to agree, I have a wonderful 530i that I still really like but in the end I just got bored of constant niggling faults and irritations. These are very old cars now.

Only thing you can do at the moment is check the tyre pressure manually and see what it reads. You are meant to reset the idrive settings everytime you top up your tyres.
