BMW and M Power Owners

You don't need to be a cynic - it's a laughable comment that that M6 will appreciate. It won't. It'll plummet.

With regard to possible appreciation,if you read my comment I was referring to the M5 30 Jahre Limited edition, compared to that 6 Series at a similar price, I doubt it's depreciation will be anything like as savage.

If it's stuck under a dust sheet and left it would appreciate but in daily use and miles under its wheels then no, of course not.

When my 2011 M3 went in for a service the dealer said that a software update was available for the car but they couldn't tell me what it was or what it would do! They wanted £100 to update it.

Does anyone know if it's worth doing and what it updates / changes exactly? I doubt the car has had once since new. It's an early 2011 model.

I have a question about my sat nav. The car is 3 years old but my maps are woefully out of date. For example it doesn't show streets near me that have been in existence for 15 years. In another area it shows a petrol station that was demolished ten years ago.
What gives?!

It's really weird. For example one of the roads is in the middle of an estate where the maps show the rest of the streets - all went in at the same time just one is missing. As for the petrol station it even has the little fuel icon!

Mk e also has the occasional phantom petrol station. No missing roads older than the car though.

I do have a closed road on mine though, that isn't actually closed. A stretch after it is though, but my sat av constantly tries to redirect me around the bit that's open.

Went on holiday the day after posting this...

I have a 530d, my Dad has a similar age 520d. His is a slightly heavier touring. His is about 5-10% more efficient than mine. The 530d is significantly quicker - paired with the 8 speed box it's far quicker than you'd expect (It's 0-60 time is a good 2 seconds quicker than the 520d). It is also noticeably more refined - i hate diesels, I can tolerate the 530d.

This is where the problem arises. IMHO the 530d is a noticeably better engine and far better suited to the car but it's also quite significantly more money than a 520d which makes the decision far less clear cut.

The 520d is affected by the infamous chain snapping issue. There are no major known issues with the 530d yet but frankly they are so ridiculously complex I'm not prepared to run it without the BMW warranty therefore don't really care.

No with one exception - the pre LCI cars have the most horrendously crap plastic around the base of the seats that squeeks if you touch it. This is fine on a car with regular seats as you never touch it but if you have Sport seats the side bolsters apply pressure to the plastic when you corner and therefore you get the squeek. Very annoying.

It's a great car. I can't see me wanting anything but F10's until they all get old and crappy.

Thanks for the reply Fox/Housey/Xs2man.

Nice write up, Fox. Haven't been in the 530d yet..by noticeably better engine and tolerable as a diesel do you mean it's more refined and less...tractor-like? I can't stand a rattly engine - hell, the previous gen 2.0 TFSI in my old car drove me up the wall because of the noise at idle so even the thought of going diesel is heart breaking.. however, the 20d in the facelift 5 series I had wasn't that bad. Presumably down to the engine bay and cabin insulation more than anything else. Gutless, though.

Are we talking eye-wateringly expensive repair bills for the 530? Does the comprehensive BMW warranty stack up against any short comings in reliability?

I didn't quite experience any of the symptoms you've described with the cheap plastics and squeaky handles with the facelift, either which is a concern as I was aiming for a pre-LCI M sport as I prefer the interior... more 'masculine' for lack of a better way to put it.

I'll try them both out, been looking at A6s too but the lack of RWD fun and the pop-up display is really putting me off.

This colour combination is..brilliant, inside and out.

Colour code/name for the exterior paint?

Even a 3.0 litre diesel is going to sound 'like a diesel' at start up/from outside the car, especially when the engine is cold. Once your in the car though it is not too bad.
