BMW and M Power Owners

They work pretty well... although in my opinion... I notice the car coming the other way before they do... they can leave almost a second of the car coming fully into view before they will dip. I can usually see the car before it gets to the corner and have the beams dipped before they can see my headlights.

So I got one of these for the weekend:

I was thinking about buying a few year old one to replace my ageing 320d as a comfy mile-eater.

In movement, they seem quite large but not problematically so.

It's only when you try to park them or move through country lanes that you notice quite how gigantic they really are...

Comfy though, for sure... and ride quality that rivals or exceeds Jag.

Glad I sampled... but I think it's going to be 5 or 6 series for our next car. Maybe 2, but I think I'd rather something a little larger for the cruising.

Granted, I could have got closer to the back wall:

These spaces aren't the biggest to start with... but even "normal" spaces it's too big for... lol :) Longer than most SUVs...

But the car moves the light to not dazzle the driver before it dips....

Sorry what? It's nearly 2 feet longer

Looked more like 1ft when i saw them next to each other...

Can park a 6 series in a normal European parking bay... 7 series is too American-sized :p

Wifey still thinks a 6 series is too big... she wants a 2 :(

The 7 Series is just 17cm longer than a 5 or 6 Series.

By contrast a 1 Series is a staggering 60cm shorter than a 5 or 6 Series - ie, the difference in length between 1 and a 6 is three times the difference in length between a 6 and 7.

Nice write up, Fox. Haven't been in the 530d yet..by noticeably better engine and tolerable as a diesel do you mean it's more refined and less...tractor-like?

Basicallly, yes. I have a rather love/hate relationship with the engine - when it's cold and you are sat in traffic it's irritatingly diesely and I continually wish it was a petrol. But when you take it on a cross country trip it's absolutely fantastic and I find myself wondering why you'd have any other engine in a car like this - once it's up to temperature it's wonderfully smooth, refined and the performance is simply excellent.

I test drove a 528i today with the 4 cyinder turbo engine as I feel this engine might offer me exactly what I want. I was surprised in several ways - firstly that from outside the car it sounded almost exactly as diesely as my 530d, which is worrying for a car that has a petrol engine, but also once on the road it was much more refined than other manufacturers 4 cylinder turbos are. I enjoyed it - I think.

Are we talking eye-wateringly expensive repair bills for the 530? Does the comprehensive BMW warranty stack up against any short comings in reliability?

I've no idea what the repair bills are like and frankly I'm just not interested in finding out. Part of the case I made myself for buying an F10 was that I could stop caring about that and simply have it all sorted in the event of an issue.

I didn't quite experience any of the symptoms you've described with the cheap plastics and squeaky handles with the facelift, either which is a concern as I was aiming for a pre-LCI M sport as I prefer the interior... more 'masculine' for lack of a better way to put it.

It's me being me, there is absolutely no need to favour an LCI because of those two criticisms, the LCI's have the same door handles anyway. I do not beleive the LCI offers any credible benefits over the pre LCI, it is the weakest LCI BMW have done (Probably because the original was so right). Effectively the headline changes and my criticisms therefore are..

a) Indicators moved from wing to wing mirror. Great, in theory. But the retention of a pointless chrome blank on the wing mirror where the indicator used to be looks stupid and might as well just be an indicator still.
b) Xenon's became standard. Great, in theory. In practice it means that every good spec car now has the base spec lights with no adaptive and halogen indicator bulbs not the better looking upgraded lights. Most high spec pre LCI cars have the visibility pack adding Adaptive Xenon, LED indicators and High beam Assist. Another step backwards then. Even most of the M5's now have the stupid halogen indicator bulbs.
c) Business Nav became standard. See above - now there are loads of cars with business navigation whereas in the past if people were paying for Nav they invariably picked Pro.
d) New rear lights. Not better, not fresher, just changed for what looks like the sake of it
e) New steering wheel on M Sport. xs2man loves his, I think it looks like it was designed for a different car and then just randomly slapped in the F10. Which it was - it's from the 3 Series.

Great.

Oh, the standard fit 18's on the M Sport are nicer with the LCI.

The big upgrades over the life of the F10 were the addition of the rare but stunning multifunction display and the upgraded NBT iDrive - but both of these features appeared before the LCI so you do not need an LCI car to get them.

This colour combination is..brilliant, inside and out.

Colour code/name for the exterior paint?

Mine is Space Grey Metallic with Black Dakota Leather and Fineline Anthracite Wood.

Currently in California and picked up a pretty much brand new (500 miles on the clock) rental 528i on Friday.

An absolutely brilliant car, although I'm not convinced by the engine - it doesn't feel right in a 5 series. It's quite coarse when you press on, the auto start/stop is very intrusive and there's noticeable turbo lag at low speed. When it gets going it isn't slow though, and the 8 speed gearbox helps a lot.

This is a totally base spec car and the US market standard spec is seriously odd. It has full electric memory seats, folding mirrors, a sunroof, professional navigation with enhanced Bluetooth, sports auto with paddles yet has no parking sensors or camera! The leather isn't real either :(

NBT iDrive is absolutely fantastic too - it makes me realise just how poor CUE is in my Cadillac.

LOL @ 4-pot in a 5-series... don't... just don't... you'll regret it

Ive had 11 (I think) BMW's and I've never had a 4 pot. They are not as good as a 6 cylinder car, no matter how much you try to convince yourself, they just aren't.

The trouble is that people are simply abandoning 6 pots when buying new. The cars are just not out there, which is a real shame.

BMW tried to offer the 530i alongside the new turbo 4 and it flopped - so they gave up.

I like the 'sailing' function of the LCI (drivetrain disengages when you are cruising over 50kph and lift off the accelerator)

LCI also has launch control which I don't believe is on the older model?

Other than that, not much in it. You are right about business nav though - total crap
