BMW and M Power Owners

I'm the same, I don't go tearing about breaking speed limits but getting to them quickly can provide some entertainment. I'll certainly try an M135i at some point.

You seem to have no idea what you want beyond 'a bmw'. You wanted a 520d the other day, now its M135 test drive time?

Don't forget to try a 218d Active Tourer and a GS1200.

Don't forget the 740Ld xDrive M Sport. That's bound to get decent economy too.

That's just it, I don't know what I want really.

The 5 series is pretty much ideal, the one sticking point is that it felt like a motorway cruiser, and I don't really drive that far, or carry passengers often. The main thing steering me towards it is that it feels a higher quality product than the other cars, and of course I like the interior and exterior a lot. I'd still put it top of the list though.

An M135i is very different, yes, but it would likely be a more entertaining car to cover shorter distances in? As would something like a 335d. There's also the fact the M135i is petrol, which would make a change after a few years on diesel.

I'm going to have a look at Audi as well, but I can't see myself getting one.

You need to work out what's most important to you, write a list, and see what comes out on top, comfort, economy, quick, handling, luxury, interior looks, exterior looks etc then go from there. the interior of the 5 series is much nicer than that of the 3 or the 4 series, the 7xx is a step up again in interior, but that is a barge. the 5xx is the perfect mix of looks / luxury and gives a decent drive.

Knocking sound coming from middle/back on driver side? If you press on the cover does it go away as mine is the same lol.

Yes, sound coming from that area but no amount of pressure silences it.

Took it for an extended run this evening and it's running rather lethargically and I'm noticing a lot of haze behind it when I pull away from other cars,in their headlights, looks like steam, I think it's fair to say the head gasket is on its way out, to be fair it's probably been failing for a while which would explain my periodic power loss issues perhaps?

The engine note has changed noticeably too.

**** **** **** & ****!

I'm annoyed as it's probably not worth the faff of fixing it but I do love the car..... :/

Edit: having done its long drive I've just gone out to it and it's taken a few attempts to start, fired eventually but run quite roughly for a few minutes, not looking good.

Sold the Z4M yesterday, kinda glad to see it gone as I never really warmed to it as a package. The engine was magnificent and it was quite an event to drive around in, but the composure down bumpy roads was laughable and quite terrifying when pushing on.
It cost me a fortune in engine work as I had worn cams and followers.

Looking forward to getting back into another Lotus :)

Getting on quite well with my first BMW. Happy with the nice smooth drive compared to what I am used to, but it's not SO smooth that it's not sporty(ish) feeling on country roads. It's refined enough for me :) I've been around Buxton ways today and it's a nice flowing drive. It will do nicely as a daily I think. I will get it booked in at a local specialist for a full on top to bottom inspection soon and work out what it needs and put my mind at rest ref the dreaded timing chain issue... hopefully all good to someone who knows what they are looking/listening for! Sounds OK to me anyway.

I haven't had much time to spend on really looking at and playing with the car bar getting in and driving really, however...shocked to find NO DIPSTICK??? Unless I am being blind?!

It does have the oil level through menu's option but I am not quite so sure I trust that! Haha. Plus I don't really get to see the condition of the oil. Hmm...

A lot of the trucks at work now have no dipstick, annoying as they tend to cry wolf saying they need a top up when they don't and end up blowing seals due to too much pressure, especially when cold, why manufacturers feel the need to do away with dipsticks is beyond me, they are simple and effective and don't lie like sensors do.

You are not being blind but it does have one - there is a service dipstick 'hidden' towards the rear of the block on the right hand side. It doesn't have an obvious red/yellow pull handle, it's black and you'll need to hunt carefully for it!

The driver is not expected to ever use it hence its concealed nature, apparently.

How thoughtful of BMW to actually still put one on, shame Volvo deem this unnecessary on their trucks! - Thankfully, Scania still fit dip sticks (which are glaringly obvious) although it isn't apparent enough to the occasional agency driver who still tops up the coolant via the oil filler on them.....

That sounds like a good idea. Really I want a balance of everything, which a 535d for example would provide... I'll need to try one and have a better look at the figures for it.

I am having similar experiences, I don't love it like I did my MX5's, but its much more comfy day to day and I do enjoy peoples reactions to it. I am amazed what a BMW badge on a sporty looking car will do in terms of how non car people treat you when it comes to the subject of cars. I get a lot of people I barely even know coming to me for car advice now alongside a lot of very funny questions about the Z4M and I don't think its a coincidence.

I think the Z4M needs to be the couple version and even there they still weren't as good as the E46 M3. Shame, at least they don't have the AWFUL steering of the non M Z4's.

Thanks mate, I shall have a look next time I can in daylight, I spotted something unlabelled with a small plastic black lid/cap looking thing... didn't want to pull too hard in case it was something I shouldn't be messing with but perhaps that is it :)
