BMW and M Power Owners

I used similar logic for changing from my Z4 to this

If you ever wake up to find that it is missing I definitely didn't steal it. Honest.

Pretty sure mine are standard chrome ones, although they are starting to go black after some spirited driving..

How come you would be looking to switch the exhaust? M3 moving on, or neighbours complaining? :D

As Acme says I find that it's far too droney on the motorway, plus when trying to be sensible (like pulling off my drive when it's cold) it's simply embarrassing tbh, far too chav. Tunnels sound epic though lol.

I really like the E92 M3 in white, with all of the standard chrome bits on it (and nice diamond cut 220M wheels) I think it's another timeless design by BMW. Hope you enjoy :)

:( Did it go to anyone local? Every now and again I receive a text from a friend who works in the Maidstone area saying that they've seen you around lol.

Just wondered what you thought to it in general. The performance looks rather impressive. The GC has some good practicality aspects, while maintaining the coupe style (even though it's similar to a 3 saloon really).

Well I liked it enough to buy one ;)

I was looking for something that was both practical enough to carry 2 young children, but that I would also be happy to drive 25-30k miles a year in mostly by myself.

I fully expected to get a 5 series but the 4GC caught my eye and after having tried both out I decided the smaller size and high level of basic kit that came with the 4GC alongside its good looks were enough to sway me from the more comfortable and wafty 5.

Th inside is identical to a 3 series in the front, with reduced headroom in the back. Not a problem for me since my kids are 4 and 7 but if you cart taller people around you might want to bear that in mind. The middle seat is useless, don't kid yourself its a 5 seater. The boot space is the same capacity as a 3 but more of it is usable, and being a hatch you can remove the parcel shelf for bigger stuff. Split seats are also standard.

Its a great car to drive with the 3 litre straight six, more than enough power for me to have fun with yet refined enough in comfort to pootle about in without feeling compromised. The I am no expert driver so never really push the limits, I've had a couple of TC on moments when getting a bit over excited coming off a roundabout but its recovered well and its never given me any concern over handling. When not in sport there is noticable turbo lag in some circumstances, particularly when flooring it at medium speed. In sport mode response is pretty much instant. Sounds pretty decent for a diesel from inside too! This lag was not so evident on the 435 I test drove.

Enough has been said elsewhere about the quality of the auto box and given you are looking at a 435 you don't have any other choice as far as I know. Fuel consumption wise, I have averaged 45mpg over the last 10k miles according to the onboard computer.

Options-wise mine came with the m-sport plus pack, comfort pack (I think anyway? The memory seats and extra storage and stuff) and active suspension. M-sport plus pack adds harmon/kardon, rear privacy glass, blinged up wheels and m-sport brakes. I wanted the h/k and the privacy glass, wasn't bothered about the wheels (I actually think the 18s looks better) but the blue brake calipers looks nice. As mine was an AUC I compromised on the wheels since the rest of the spec was what I was after.

Ride is relatively hard on the m-sport suspension, its tempered a bit by the active suspension option but don't expect a bumpless ride. The cabin is quite noisy at speed in my opinion, a combination of wind noise and tyre roar. Its bearable but if you are looking for cocooned comfort you will be disappointed. The 5 was much better in that respect. Given its mostly just me in the car I just turn the music up and ignore it.

It took me ages to get the seat and steering wheel into a position I was comfortable with but once set its perfectly fine. Not sure how people bigger than me would get on with the sport seats as they are very narrow. I'm 5'8" and 12 stone and its a snug fit for me. One nice feature on the seats is you can tighten up the side bolsters by pressing a button to really grip you in your seat when you want to fling it about, then press another button to loosen them up again for normal use.

As you would expect for a < 1 year old car its needed no maintenance other than the standard service.

Colour wise its Carbon black (its kind of blue really) which looks amazing when freshly cleaned and polished and then looks grey about 5 minutes after setting off. I think they look great in Estoril Blue and grey as well, not so much in silver or white but its personal preference.

All in all I'm very happy with it, I can't think of anything else in this (admittedly niche) class I would pick ahead of it.

Thanks for that. The GC I'd be looking at would be one of our company cars, for my own car I'm leaning towards a 5 series, but a decent 3/4 series would be tempting as well, as would a 35i of the smaller cars. Thankfully I don't need to make a decision just yet.

There are some incredible deals (business) on the 640d GC, but the P11D value is a potential issue.

Checked my oil level which was fine but noticed this mayo on my oil filler cap & filler, never seen it previously on this car or any of my previous BMW's, I'm wondering if my head gasket is starting to fail....

2000 e39 530i, 122k....

The mayo is quite common if the car is used for short journeys but I must be honest that doesn't look good IMO. I had mayo on the oil cap on my 528, then noticed oil in coolant and massive pressure in the cooling system, pulled the head and the bore liners were proud of the block so the engine was toast. :(

Get a compression test done.

How long do you use the car for and mileage covered. When I bought my 330i I had a similar thing but the guy used the car for 6 miles a day. After my 18 mile a day commute it cleared up and has been clear for over 15k miles.

It's a bit gunky but give it a clean, check the fluids then intentionally try to take it a few long drives over the next week and see how much comes back

Car gets used for ~ 18miles round trip commute 4 days per week, it gets upto temperature quickly and I tend to avoid the commuter crawl, Friday Saturday & Sunday is ballpark 100miles plus at least, it doesn't lose water.

I'll take it for a good rag tomorrow and keep an eye on it, fingers crossed its just a bit of gunk build up.....

Clean gunk and just check the end of the rocker cover breather pipe coming to the rocker cover and the end of your dipstick

The end of the dipstick is fine, no sign of gunk there, whilst looking at it this afternoon I've also noticed a tapping / knocking sound which sounds like it's coming from the middle of the cam cover, I think I'll pull the plugs tomorrow incase one has worked loose.

Unusually for an M54 it uses no oil, the level is fine (full).

Anyone got/tested a 435d, is it any good? (I suppose a newer 335d counts here too)

Also, M135/235i owners, what sort of MPG do you get (purely out of interest)?

My all time average over 25k mikes so far is 34.4mpg. I regularly see 38-40mpg on a typical work journey. On a track day it'll get about 8mpg though :D

Edit: it's an M135i LCI by the way

Knocking sound coming from middle/back on driver side? If you press on the cover does it go away as mine is the same lol.

That's higher than I'd have expected, not bad at all. I assume as someone who goes on track days, you don't steadily drive it everywhere in Eco Pro mode like a pensioner! :p

My 530i has looked like that for almost 10 years.

Reassuring I guess, it's bothering me though as it certainly wasn't like this last week, seems to have developed all of a sudden, I'm wondering why.....

I rely on my license for work and I generally stick to speed limits, I could do all my driving and 80mph and I'd bet it wouldn't save me more than 10 minutes on a typical journey, and burn through a load more fuel in the process.. I do quite a few miles, so a typical motorway journey will be done in Eco Pro mode at 70mph.

I bought it new as the LCI was released (April 2015), and I've just passed 25k miles in it and it has just had its first service. Tyres are original (and have done a track day and a Nurburgring trip) and are down to 4mm currently.

It's a fantastic little car, quiet and refined and impressively economical pottering around, and a bit of a lunatic if you want it to be.

I'm the same, I don't go tearing about breaking speed limits but getting to them quickly can provide some entertainment. I'll certainly try an M135i at some point.

I had a M235i before my 640d (roughly the same engine as the x35d but RWD not AWD) Best I'd get from the M235i was 42mpg and average just over 30 in the time I had it. I got 54 mpg on a return journey to Leeds (135 each way) and current average is over 38 mpg in the 640d.
