BMW and M Power Owners

What an odd thing to do. Fly into London to buy a car without having any lined up to view?

Autotrader works from Germany and he could call dealers etc and arrange viewings and create a shortlist

He's probably going to end up impulsing buying a bad example because his time is running out. I can't imagine a 9 year old 635d is a particularly great First Car anyway

He was actually in Ireland before flying into London which he did contact a few places via email. Hes viewed a few but non have been that great. One had a different brand tire on each corner.

I know its not a normal first car but hes far from normal.

Any suggestions on anywhere else other than the places mentioned hes looking?

For his budget none of them will be that great. He really should be looking at other cars.

Guys,

What would you expect to pay for a 2008-2010 M3? Friend desperately wants one but can only really afford 20k max. I've told him that seems a bit low and I'd be worried it might be a shed, but then I know nothing about this part of the market

He's sent me a couple off ebay for 18k, both with 70-80k miles, that both claim to be immaculate but it seems cheap to me?

Yeah I've told him this, that if he's trying to skimp on the initial cost of the car that he'll be in for a shock when it starts going wrong.

I just wanted some confirmation that his budget was too low, I can show him this now :D

Ta

I just ran a national search on BMW's used website, <£20k and 'M3 coupe'.

Nothing came up..

Now I'm not saying he should be able to afford one from BMW per se, but it certainly gives a good indication.

He should save up a bit more and buy this - http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201606094748580

2009, 60k miles, CIC iDrive, DCT, EDC, best exterior colour ever, 1 owner, FBMWSH.

His budget isn't completely ridiculous at all. There are a lot of dreamers out there who think their 57 plate E92 M3 with black alloys and 80k miles is still worth £20k. When you look past these and look at the cars that are actually shifting for a reasonable price, the above is a good example.

Not a great day - woken up at 0200hrs to the M3's alarm going off. Went outside, two guys do a runner away from the car... brilliant, no immediate signs of damage at the time, but the alarm wouldn't go off with the key fob, had to use the key part to open the car, then it wouldn't start. immobilised?

anyway, eventually alarm went off, and the car would open and start. But now every time I lock it, the alarm will go off after a few minutes.

How the hell do I reset whatever is up with this? And what the heck have these idiots done to cause this? Any ideas?

Well he's picking up a 635d today. Its a 10 plate with 105k on the clock but over all I think he's happy. The water pump hadn't being changed and a few other bits so they are doing that pre collection.

Which M3 is it? Sounds like they may have scanned your fob at some point and tried o use a clone which has failed for whatever reason.

I'd take it in for a diagnostic to see what's what, and get your fob re-paired with your car.

They seem to use lock jammers so you think the car is locked but it isn't, come back to the car to programme themselves a new fob and drive off. I don't think it's been easier to steal a car. For some bizarre reason manufactures don't lock away or immobilise the ODB port. Probably interrupted halfway through the process and the car isn't happy with it.

One of the reasons I enabled the audible blip when locking the car. The blip will only sound with all doors are fully locked, all windows are closed and the boot + bonnet are closed. If I hear no blip, I know something is up.

But it’s silly that the OBD port is left enabled when the car is off. I guess it’s a way to diagnose the car if it doesn’t turn over for whatever reason?

The position of the ODB port is determined by legislation, so its position is effectively fixed. It also gets used for monitoring the cars system when the car is switched off (ie current drains) so has to be active.
