BMW and M Power Owners

There's a few pictures in there that don't make sense. The dash one with black and the aluminium trim, the wheel picture.

Any real advantage of a 535d over a 530d?

There is a single glaring spec omission - no sport automatic transmission so you get the crap plastic shifter. Very odd to see it missing on a 535d especially one with such a huge specification otherwise.

Lets move onto the price.

It is expensive - especially given it's 2 years old and has 40k miles on it and it's from a private seller. Much of this is because it's a 535d Touring with a large spec but it's still a consideration. I would suggest it's probably 'worth' the asking price because of what it is, but it's a lot for a car of that age and mileage IMHO.

Some considerations about that mileage:

a) The service package runs out in 9k miles time despite it only being 2 years old
b) If you do more than 19k in the next year you won't be able to renew the warranty at the lower rate

Other than that what more is there to say? It's a stunning car.

There is no substance to my next comment but is's a surprisingly weirdly written advert. I can't put my finger on why it seems odd, I guess I have this old fashioned view that somebody selling a car like that privately, therefore not on finance, would be perhaps a tad more eloquent and better at grammar :p Also why is there only a single photograph of the exterior of the car?! The wheel photograph is a library shot from a different car... Just feels odd.

Thanks for the reply. Good points about the wheel photo and the lack of exterior shots.

Aside from the plastic gear knob, is sports auto considered an essential then?

What price would you be aiming at if you were to negotiate to buy this car?

It's also had 2 owners in 2 years?

Yeah...I could probe the seller on that, but they'll just give xyz plausible reason. Of itself I'm not sure it causes me huge alarm. The car's still under warranty.

A 535d is everything a 530d is, and a little bit more, with no additional running costs.

The downside is that they are often considerably more expensive than the equivalent 530d. You get some of this back when you sell the car, as the residuals are better. But given most of us buy to a budget in practice you will end up with a older 535d than 530d for the same money.

Always annoys me when they say it has every extra when clearly it doesn't

It is on the pricey side a similar spec/age/mileage car sold recently at my local BMW dealer which was up at 28k.

With the 535Ds I have driven I generally find the extra power is wheelspun away so very evenly matched to a 530D upto about 80.

True. My M5 had two owners in the first 2 or 3 years of its life, then sold onto the third owner who kept it for 13 years so I guess it doesn't necessarily mean ropy. Worth asking though.

No, it is not essential.

Sport Automatic Transmission:

a) Replaces the crap shifter with a nicer one
b) Adds paddles on the wheel
c) Has a different software program for quicker shifting and a better manual mode with gearshift display on the dash.

Practically speaking, a) is a matter of personal taste, b) you'll never ever use anyway but c) is very useful. You can, though, enable the functions of c) on a car without SAT through coding.

It's just a shame to see it missing when it was only about 150 quid!

About £26k depending on how obsessed you are with MASSIVE SPEC.

A regular spec one has a Retail Transacted price in Glass's of £27k. £24k trade.

Obviously this one is fairly unique in that very few will have this level of spec. If thats important to you then you are going to need to overpay in order to get it. How much you are prepared to overpay for spec is a personal choice I guess.

I drove a 2013 535d back in May and was underwhelmed but part of this was an expectation management thing. I expected it to blow me away compared to my then 2010 530d but it didn't, it just felt like a 530d but with a bit more urge from low down and a bit more acceleration.

I still liked it and I tried to buy it but the dealer were annoying. What I did learn was that I wasn't that bothered whether I ended up in a 530d or a 535d. There were pros and cons to both (535d: Bit faster, better exhuasts. 530d: Much newer/lower mileage for the money).

It is a cause of great smugness to me that they still have it for sale today - advertised at 5k less than it was up for when I drove it.

There are basically no advantages which is why the used market absolutely despises them and why they seem like good value versus a 335i.

I almost bought an ActiveHybrid 5 twice but bottled it for this reason - nobody seems to want them and BMW themselves couldn't tell me whether the Hybrid battery system was covered by the extended warranty - which specifically states batteries are not covered but seems to have been written before Hybrids existed.

It is effectively a 335i with a more unique transmission setup and a huge pile of batteries to drag around. It's electric range is limited to less than 2 miles at low speed.

Edit:

LOL, they are now EVEN CHEAPER!

There is an AH5 M Sport on a '14 for 21k too. Every time I discounted them and decided they were a complete minefield they'd get even cheaper. Seems the trend hasn't been bucked. There must be some point at which they make a good buy but I've no idea where that might be or how you'd ever get rid of it.

Fox thanks for the reply, that 335i ah3 looks interesting and am having a look. Is the 335i worth the hassle or should I go for a 328i instead. Wondering which of the two is likely to be more reliable?

I'd imagine they are about as reliable as each other. There is nothing simpler about a 328i if thats what you are thinking.

The benefit of a 328i is that its cheaper to buy and a bit more fuel efficient.

The engines are much of a muchness really. Nothing hugely different from them in terms of design or component spec that makes one better than the other in terms of reliability. Performance wise, the 335i is obviously quicker but also thirstier to boot.
I had a 328i and until the day I sold it hitting kick-down still put a smile on my face. Don't trust the advertised 0-60 figures you see on it. They're way off ;)

The advertised 0-60 figures are about right, it's the quoted power output thats off (As is fairly obvious from the 0-60 figures!).

I consistently got a 0.5s difference on mine which wasn't modded in any way. That's going off an advertised 0-62 of 6.2s though (can't think whether that was from the bmw website or wiki though).

Hi.

I have been offered a M2 at list price of 43k with options. Is it worth buying? It's not something I'm super keen on but if I can get in and out for free I would not mind.

Are we talking brand new or used? If it's brand new it depends what the options are that'll determine whether it's a good deal.

It's a great car by all accounts.

I'd definitely spend £43k on a car with uncertain residuals that I'm not super keen on. Sounds like the way forward :p

I have not been following the M2 at all, I only heard its a really good car and has long waiting lists so I would not mind trying it if its easy to get in and out of like the GT4 was.

New

Options are not all that special, things like HK sound, visibility pack, sunroof, comfort access. Its a manual.

Im going to have a bit of a read up tonight.
