Well, when i say "heavy" I mean about 8000 a year, so maybe not that heavy....:p I love "top-down" motoring. Would like to use the Z4 more for business in dry weather and general running around with me in it or just my 10 year old daughter and it would keep mileage off of my 535D. I would use the 535D when missus and all the kids with me and for rainy/unpleasant days at work.

The Z4 would essentially be a toy....
 
£7000 is slightly over priced, I'd want a 3.0si for that money, the auto gearbox is also fairly awful.

But the z4 would tick the 'fun' box, as it's now winter time and the seller has to get rid I'd use that a decent bargaining chip
 
In case anyone is interested I've decided not to go for the 325i as it simply is too much of a liability and to be honest I cannot be bothered to chase issues. The idea was for it to be a runabout but I think it'd be a pain in the bum more than it would be a useful.

Also, as per my previous post, the bargain car in question ended up in a state of not running so it doesn't really make sense to buy a car that isn't running.

Currently deciding what to get instead...

This does beg the question with regards to the state of the used car market over the coming years, as cars get ever more complex it's really going to impact the cheaper end of the market, surely?

Certainly something I've been considering. Even the standard vehicles, the small petrol engines of the world are now coupled to turbo charged engines and semi auto gearboxes, the likes of which I'd not dare run without some sort of warranty.

On the flip side, I guess the manufacturing process is in continual improvement and cars should last longer in other respects.

I'm really not sure, I guess we'll know in x amount of years how it all panned out. The future is always unknown, and always scary! :D

I know that I wasn't all that worried of anything going wrong on my E46, other than an inconvenience to my time and the obvious cash flow impact, there was pretty much no way it was going to absolutely bankrupt me. And a lot of things, even big things, could be done yourself and or cheaply.

My F20 1 series on the other hand... as I said, with no warranty, the car would not be on my drive.
 
For me the decider was not about the cost of the repairs really. It was more the time taken to find issues and, more importantly, the hassle. If it was an M3 then, yeah, it'd be worth it but I just need an A to B tool.

Now I just need to decide how slow a car I want to get and the trade-off against reliability.
 
I'm too indecisive to be able to determine either... budget is probably <£2k and requirement may vary, I currently car share for work but I'm tempted to go solo which would increase the usage but quite a lot.

The best cheap option I'm looking at is a Nissan Almera. I'd be able to purchase, insure and task for under £2k! However they do 0-60 in like 11 seconds, which is scarily slow, especially when I'm used to around 6 seconds. Clearly 0-60 times aren't the be all and end all but it gives a good indication.

S40 diesel perhaps? Unsure about a derv at this price point.

They would have had a fair point tbh. I've had electric window issues on almost all of my cars. Colt 1 drivers window failed in down position, Colt 2 issues with anti-trap on drivers window, E36 issues with anti-trap on both windows, Lexus issues with anti-trap on passenger window, Silvia total failure in half-down position drivers window.

I just want any car that I enjoy. I live walking distance to work and have no family so I'm free to consider anything that takes my fancy. I'm trying very hard not buy another 911.
