BMW i8

That's a serious amount of money to have a sit in a car

£110k is a serious amount of money to sit in a tech demo (the i8)...

Especially when you can likely have something like the 540C for less money, which is a better car in many ways... as the 540C depreciation, even with "oh woe is me" McLaren depreciation seemingly being high is much lower than the i8... so a much better buy if that is the entry point.

He's looking at £60k ones not £110k ones.

Depends on what you're looking for.

I think the i8 is vile... although I'll give it good handling. For it's spec sheet... it's is technically impressive... good weight for such a vehicle especially.

At £60k... you'll have a lot more fun in an M2 or M4 and have plenty of change for the extra fuel spend.

You could get a really nice 997.2 911 C2S or C4S...

I started with that... but others were mentioning cars in the £110k range ;)

At £60k... I'd still be looking at more enjoyable things like the M4/M2... if wanting to go with BMW... otherwise 997.2 911 for good fun and reliable daily... or Vauxhall VXR would be a giggle for sure... OP hasn't specced his requirements or desires.

i8 isn't that great, even at £60k.

I want a car that has headroom and legroom - I am 6'4" - that is great and fun to drive. In the i8 I have 1-2 cm of headroom but going over bumps seemed fine. In my Skoda I have much, much more headroom, but the driving experience isn't all that.

Porka should still be OK... IMO... Porsche is more upright... so might have you in the headroom department.

McLaren is more laid back, so should cater for you... drop me a trust and I'll put you in touch with my guy for a test... if you're looking in the new car price budget.

Defo stay away from Lambos... I barely fit in the Hurracan Coupe... you'd never fit... the spyder is a nono for me because at 6', I'm too tall.

I'm long in the trunk and short in the arm which makes things difficult.

No, I'm definitely not in that price bracket, and I'm really stretching at £60k. Indeed, as the car will be parked outside in a courtyard, insurance might well make the proposition prohibitive.

As Joe mentioned, I was in the fortunate position of running one of these for several months and 10,000 miles.

First thing's first: I wouldn't buy one new. The depreciation, as you've noted, is absolutely horrific. When mine went back, there were numerous nearly new examples up for grabs for upwards of £30k off list.

During its time, as I was using it for primarily a motorway commute, it averaged around 35-40mpg. It was charged most days, too, so it's not like it was being run entirely off the plug.

It had its highlights but it also had its flaws; the front end could be a bit wayward when deploying its torque, visibility wasn't great, the doors could be an absolute pain in car parks, it wasn't particularly rewarding on the handling front and so on. It was always great fun for a while, partly due to its striking looks, but once you'd spent some time with it various facets would often start to grate.

Would I buy one over a 911? No, unless I was in some kind of nightmarish company car-tax related situation. The Porsche is a far more comfortable, engaging and compelling car to drive.

Would I buy an M4 as an alternative? No. GTS aside, I find M4s pretty dire. I've not driven a CS yet but I remain to be convinced. Even the Mercedes-AMG C63 leaves me a little cold; the interior quality isn't great in areas and it didn't really grab me, considering what you're paying.

A C43 coupe or estate, however, is far more appealing due to the lower price – and, in part, due to the great powertrain. They can be heavy on fuel but I'd certainly recommend looking at one of those, Porsche aside. The 540C is a beautiful thing, too, if you're willing to go down that kind of route. I used to average around 30mpg commuting back and forth in those, if economy's a concern. Similarly, the 911s would often do 30-35mpg on a run.

My old i8 updates from the magazine have been put online (from month one to month seven) here, if you're interested: https://www.carmagazine.co.uk/car-r...bmw/bmw-i8-2016-hybrid-long-term-test-review/

I have had around 10 porkers including 997.1, 997.2,991, Cayman GT4, also had a BMW m6, 335i, Z435is and a bunch of other cars. I normally get bored and change after 6 months or so.

2 years down the line I still love the i8, on papers its numbers are rather disappointing but to own and live with its just fantastic. It feels so so quick, because of the electric motors the power is available right from stand still. It gets so much positive attention, its been a joy to own.

running costs are not bad, insurance is cheap, no congestion charge, free parking, free charging at work, I get 37 MPG (about 32 in a 991.1 and 15mpg in the M6 and GT4), most cars have a 5 year service pack, nothing has gone wrong with the car so can't comment of repairs but depreciation is SHOCKING. At £55k to £60k its a fantastic car, at 90k new after discounts I would look at something else.

However I think used prices will firm up in 6 to 12 months, 2016 and late 2015 saw a lot of cars sold on cheap lease deals.

numbers on the roads
2018 - 1.8k
2017 - 1.7k
2016 - 1.5k
2015 - 1k
2014 - 279

so the cars come off lease are being dumped on the market now, I have seen them go as low as 45k. From 2016 onwards they only shifted 100 to 200 cars per year. BMW will probably discontinue the i8 soon so my guess is that a 60k i8 will probably fall to 45k in the short term but back up to 65k over the next couple of years.
