Boeing 777 shot down

Wouldn't the missile have destroyed the entire aircraft in midflight in an instant especially with fuel on board? Seems like a lot of debris clustered close together, plus the video shows fireball explosion as it strikes the ground which suggests the main body of the plane was still intact.

Could have taken the tail out, glanced the wing/body etc... causing the pilots to lose control and go into an uncontrolled dive? (no idea if that is possible - but would explain what you said).

Just need to wait for black box recording for that though probably

Hit the wing or tail fin of the plane and plane lost control.

Chap on Sky News was saying the missile was likely detonated near to the plane, without directly hitting it.

No, this isn't Hollywood.
It very much depends where it hits, and the wreckage is supposedly spread over 9 miles.

so...a resounding no to that one!

“Obviously, the state over whose territory it happened bears responsibility for this terrible tragedy,” Putin said as cited by Itar-Tass.

So I guess today this land isn't filled with Russian people who really want to be part of Russia?

Dude it was clearly a missile. You can tell by the pixels and I know having seen many a missiled plane in my time.

Really. So when Concorde erupted into flames on take off because a small section of rubber ricocheted off the fuel tanks that must have been Hollywood effect.

A supersonic missile detonating next to a fully fuel laden 777 has more than enough potential for destroying the aircraft in one go if not from a fuel explosion but explosive decompression tearing the air frame apart.

****ing pro Russian *****.

All I have to say about those worthless morons.

Worthless morons who are saying the same thing that people have said repeatedly in this thread. There is effectively a war going in there where fighter planes are being used and SAMs are being used and the airlines risk managed this and found it to be acceptable. Any basic risk assessment should look at that and say chance of happening not likely but if it did it would be really serious so we just don't do it.

It is a very big aircraft, it is unlikely for a missile to take it down into tiny pieces. That would be somewhat over kill even for a smaller aircraft.

Its a bit sad that airlines were quite calm about flying planes over this region in order to keep costs down given that planes were being shot down... The idea that 'its OK they're just using the man-packed systems - flying over X0,000 ft is safe' still seems as spectacular an oversight as 'ah its OK we've packaged up the sub prime debt into tranches... its all AAA rated now'.

Aviation expert on BBC news said that only Ukrainian or Russian military would be trained to operate mobile anti-air vehicles and he's right. Kiev would have known about overhead civ airliners and this is most definitely Russian military operating the weapons.

Interesting fact, most of the passengers were sucked out during the blast and were aware of their fate whilst free falling to the ground for multiple minutes, some of them young children.

I'm a bit iffy as to the provenance of that conversation. But, there is this line:

If that can be verified, there's an increased chance the recording is genuine.

You can hear them say Thompson in the recording, regardless of whether you speak the language or not.

What a horrible thought, can only hope they quickly lost consciousness.
