Boeing 777 shot down

Does Putin not care that he is slowly turning the world against him?

No because every show of strength against the US is a point on his approval ratings at home, and you may have failed to notice his recent tour of South America, BRICS Development Bank and massive deals/cooperation with China.

A lot of people in here jumping on the anti-Russia bandwagon when it can just as easily have been Ukrainian troops as Russian troops. Unlikely to have been rebels as they wouldn't have the technology (or even if they did, they wouldn't have the skills to use it - source: multiple press releases).

This is a real tragedy and I hope it was an accident whcihever side did it, but if responsibility is pinned on the Russians sanctions are likely to get a whole lot worse, and quickly. I can't see why either side would do this deliberately, it helps neither cause other than to blame the other.

One oddity about the flight path is why it differs from the one taken by the same flight the previous three days, which did not fly over eastern Ukraine.

Other planes had been using that flight path, they have only now banned them!!
Get your facts straight!

When were planes banned from that fight path then? do you have that information? why was this plane allowed in to that airspace if planes were already banned? I am just trying to understand how such a terrible event could occur. I had read previously that it was a restricted airspace. But now you are implying that it was not and is only now a restricted airspace.

Given that blame may prove to be difficult to bring to justice whoever pushed the button and gave such orders, I would imagine that relatives and other organisations are going to put a lot of pressure on Malaysia airlines, other operators on the route and the various air authorities for allowing them to fly through that air space. They will likely seek compensation and charges in court against a company or someone in order to hold at least someone accountable for what has happened.

I hope they do tbh... its pretty reckless of them - yes its a low probability event but the consequences of it happening are severe... its just the same robotic management - stick to the model/don't question it approach... whether that involves ignoring what happens if house prices don't rise or ignoring what happens if the supply of weapons available to the rebels changes. People just follow models and don't question the assumptions used to create them.

They were just saying on the news that any trained sam operator would spot a civilian plane from miles away. Looks like some novices got their hands on something they didn't know how to use properly.

The thing is this could spark another Cold War with Ukraine in the centre, Putin is nuts enough to do this

I kinda agree, Russia drifted into 'democracy' in the 90s following the fall of Communism. But the under the influence and rule of Putin it has gone somewhat back in the other direction over the last 10 years, I think it's now referred to as being Totalitarian.

Aviation expert on BBC news said that only Ukrainian or Russian military would be trained to operate mobile anti-air vehicles

Plus military/ex military from Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Cyprus, Egypt, Finland, India, North Korea, China, Syria, Vietnam, Venezuela, Estonia, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Latvia, Lithuania, Moldova, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan.

Or anyone who's read the manual...

Well they're pretty sure about whodunit.

Well they're pretty sure about whodunit.

Sensationalist, scaremongering crap, designed solely to grab readers' attention regardless of facts - expect nothing less from that abomination of a publication. Somehow the Sun has gotten to the bottom of this before all of the world powers...

"The country in whose airspace this happened bears responsibility for it," he said.

Putin massively clutching at straws there, if a rogue element shoots one down in russian airspace I suppose it becomes his fault????

Thought not.

SBU intercepts phone conversations of separatists admitting downing a civilian plane
Malaysia Airlines Boeing 777-200 flying from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur was allegedly shot down by a group of Russian-backed Cossack militants near the village of Chornukhine, Luhansk Oblast, some 80 kilometers north-west of Donetsk, according to recordings of intercepted phone calls between Russian military intelligence officers and members of terrorist groups, released by the country’s security agency (SBU).

One phone call apparently was made at 4:40 p.m. Kyiv time, or 20 minutes after the plane crash, by Igor Bezler, who the SBU says is a Russian military intelligence officer and leading commander of the self-proclaimed Donetsk People’s Republic. He reports to a person identified by Ukraine’s SBU as a colonel in the main intelligence department of the general headquarters of the armed forces of the Russian Federation Vasili Geranin regarding the shot down plane, which is about to be examined by the militants.

The second intercepted conversation released by the Security Service of Ukraine was apparently between militants nicknamed “Major” and “Greek” immediately upon inspection of the crash site.

“It’s 100 percent a passenger (civilian) aircraft,” Major is recorded as saying, as he admitted to seeing no weapons on site. “Absolutely nothing. Civilian items, medicinal stuff, towels, toilet paper.”

In the third part of conversation Cossack commander Nikolay Kozitsin talking to an unidentified militant cynically suggests that the Malaysia Airlines airplane could've been carrying spies, as, otherwise, it would have no business flying in that area.
Translation:
Igor Bezler: We have just shot down a plane. Group Minera. It fell down beyond Yenakievo (Donetsk Oblast).
Vasili Geranin: Pilots. Where are the pilots?
IB: Gone to search for and photograph the plane. Its smoking.
VG: How many minutes ago?
IB: About 30 minutes ago.
SBU comment: After examining the site of the plane the terrorists come to the conclusion that they have shot down a civilian plane. The next part of the conversation took place about 40 minutes later.
“Major”: These are Chernukhin folks who shot down the plane. From the Chernukhin check point. Those cossacks who are based in Chernukhino.
“Grek”: Yes, Major.
"Major": The plane fell apart in the air. In the area of Petropavlovskaya mine. The first “200” (code word for dead person). We have found the first “200”. A Civilian.
“Greek”: Well, what do you have there?
“Major”: In short, it was 100 percent a passenger (civilian) aircraft.
“Greek”: Are many people there?
“Major”: Holy ****! The debris fell right into the yards (of homes).
“Greek”: What kind of aircraft?
“Major”: I haven’t ascertained this. I haven’t been to the main sight. I am only surveying the scene where the first bodies fell. There are the remains of internal brackets, seats and bodies.
“Greek”: Is there anything left of the weapon?
“Major”: Absolutely nothing. Civilian items, medicinal stuff, towels, toilet paper.
“Greek”: Are there documents?
“Major”: Yes, of one Indonesian student. From a university in Thompson.
Militant: Regarding the plane shot down in the area of Snizhne-Torez. It’s a civilian one. Fell down near Grabove. There are lots of corpses of women and children. The Cossacks are out there looking at all this. They say on TV it’s AN-26 transport plane, but they say it’s written Malaysia Airlines on the plane. What was it doing on Ukraine’s territory?
Nikolay Kozitsin: That means they were carrying spies. They shouldn’t be ***ing flying. There is a war going on.

I heard about this just as I got in from work, it's unbelievable. I've just been reading the news article, RIP to all those that lost their lives and my thoughts are with their families :(

Who's backside has that come out of?

Indeed, considering the fact that the ONLY time the US has been at DEFCON 2 was during the Cuban Missile Crisis. If 9/11 rates DEFCON 3 I really don't see an airliner shot down over Ukraine rating a 2.
