I think it's a Russian system, so Ukraine could have them, but apparently the rebels have at least one and were claiming to have shot down something just before the news broke.

And now the rebels are denying any involvement in the downing of the airliner (BBC have just reported).

Could easily be uke national guard trying to get revenge for all the planes they've lost recently, as there are no reports of freedom fighters having tracked aa.

perhaps, although ukraine are saying they were tracking it via normal ATC, so would know exactly what it was and where it came from
I doubt pro-Russian separatists have live ATC data

Where have you been? Russia has been sending heavy weapons over the border for weeks. Many of the fighters are Russian regulars. This is a tacit invasion.

Christ I've not been following it recently didn't realise that was the caliber of weapons that the rebels are being equipped with

This, OK the first think I though was "shot down" but I think at the moment everybody is jumping to this conclusion.

I think they only thing we currently "know" is it's crashed.

The US will have access to satellite imagery that should be able to identify ultra-violet plumes if a long-range surface-to-air missile was fired.
