I don't think you'd be flying over Ukraine anyway on that route, but in any case planes are now diverting around Eastern Ukraine.

Why? It's in their air space, under their ATC, not to mention the separatists posting they shot something down in the area, which were quickly removed.
Obviously we don't know but it doesn't make any sense other than a separatist attack mistaking it as something else.

And agree **** is going to hit the fan, what the hell is USA going to do.

Russia is taking the brunt of the attacks by the west for what the BRICS alliance is doing. I think both sides will deny involvement but the insinuations are already that Russia did it or are indirectly to blame. More sanctions yay.

The creation of the Brics bank will almost surely create competition for both the World Bank and other similar regional funds.

Brics nations have criticised the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund for not giving developing nations enough voting rights.

One of the goals for the bank - whose creation has been discussed for some time - would be to increase the amount of money loaned to developing countries to help with infrastructure projects.

That is a normal route to the Far East, done it many times, I bet there are planes over that air space every hour of the day at those altitude. The question is why and how this plane was targeted. Did it stand out from the plane that just went before it?

News just said that Ukraine have been using a llyushian 76(transport plane to supply troops) in the area, so maybe a miss identification.

It was a scheduled flight from Amsterdam Schipol to KL, it will have had hundreds of Europeans on board many of whom will have been connecting for onward travel to Australia.

This is very much more than something just affecting Malaysia.
