It wouldnt go that way if people got proper insurance though...

What usually comes out of threads like this is the general conclusion that if you can't afford the insurance in your own name for your own car, then you cant afford to run the car and should take the bus until you can (give or take a few arguements)

Exactly. You wouldn't buy a car if you couldn't afford to fill it with petrol, you wouldn't buy a car if you couldn't afford to service it, you wouldn't buy a car if you couldn't afford to buy it in the first place (crazy finance-users aside)—why should insurance be any different?

That was his first car and at age 17?/18? I highly doubt he could get it fully comp for £1200. Even on my own my 1995 ford fiesta 1.1 would have cost me more for third party fire and theft.

tbh though insurance companys take the pi**with young males for women its like half the price

That's because 17 yeal old girls don't drive in the the same manner that 17 year old lads generally do.

You, do get some mad girl driver's tho.. i think its because they want to get use to the roads a bit.. as us lads want to race and flood it, and see how fast you get out of your car etc :D

the 306 td's are cheap to insure though. It would have cost me the same to insure a 1.1 fiat punto...

At least he has some kind of insurance, a lot of kids these days just don't bother because of the huge cost.

You should really be the main driver, you could always ask how much it would cost to be the main driver on your mums policy. That's the way my bro played it.

I know that, you know that, we all know that. However, the key word was 'generally'. A lot of young lads drive like **** and crash their cars, the same as some crash through sheer inexperience, that's the whole reason that your insurance is higher.

What you should have done IMO, would be to buy a cheap car, less than a grand. Use the extra cash to insure the car, it wouldn't matter about getting fully comp on a car of that value, you have little to lose so TPFT would be fine.

The problem you have is that you've got a car worth over 3k that if you stack, you stand to lose a lot on and technically, if you are the main driver as i suspect (;)), you are not insured to drive in your insurers eyes.

seems like a nice first car to have :)

not too sure on the backbox though, I never understand why people want their cars to sound louder/faster than they actually are, if the car was turbocharged or heavily modified then I could understand the need for a free flowing exhaust, but on a small engine it seems pointless

not having a dig, just sharing my thoughts :)

The way ive done it. Insurance is a joke for first drivers if they want there own policy. Especially with being a student and only a part time job. :o

When I were a lad students, even those with part time jobs didn't own cars. Even with insurance being so expensive, the cost of motoring is lower now than it has been in the past.

Ah the joys of all those years begging for lifts...

1.2 16v Corsa + Me at 25 years of age + Fully comp = £627

Mind you, had I stuck with the driving lessons at 18, I'd probably be paying a heck of a lot less now!
