bought a first car... opinions

who said she doesnt drive it more? and as her names in the logbook she has 2 insure it

Not going to get stuck into the "named driver debate" but this statement is incorrect.

There will be a tickbox on any online quote (or a question asked on an over-the-phone quote) to say whether you are the registered keeper or not. To this, you simply say "no". It's still your policy, but your mum's name is on the logbook.

IIRC though, not being the registered keeper adds a little onto the quote... I've always had my cars registered in my name ever since I was 17, so can't be sure.

its pretty nippy definately doesnt seem like a 1.2 and the handling is brilliant thanks to the stiffer springs of the sxi model. handles a bit lke a go kart on steroids :p

Oh yeah, those 1.2 Corsa's are certainly quick alright.

I saw one pwning an Evo the other week. Awesome stuff

Seriously though, not a bad first car. Certainly not my cup of tea, but if you like it, then that's good enough :)

Looks a nice colour too. Just keep it subtle.

but lets face it most young males wouldnt be able to afford to drive as the insurance is completely ridiculous

I was able to afford a £2200 insurance policy for a 1.4 Rover while working part-time.

I drive a 95 reg 3 door ford fiesta 1.1. Car cost me £300 i'm the only driver on my policy TPFT....£472.50 per year for my first year 0NCB :p

It's a nice enough car i just think you were a bit silly spending so much on your first car. It is pretty much enevitable you will bump it. Your insurance company aren't going to be too pleased with you over insurance fraud, at the end of the day it was your choice. Look after it.

Wouldnt be my choice of first car but congrats on gaining your independance. Unfortunately all this blab about insurance is very true, shoulda done pass plus mate! I was TPFT on a 306 dTurboS @ 17 for 1200, now FC on a 1.8 Astra SRi (same money as your car btw!) with 0 NCB (wrote off the 306 in 2 months :p ) for £1200.

Yeah but seriously don't crash, and as you say not all lads drive like loons at 17. I remember saying this, and within a few weeks trying top speed runs on my local test track and a time trial in the country roods!

But yeah message is, congrats have fun dont crash good luck!

Maybe not so inevitable though. I think you'll find you'd be much more careful with a car worth 11 times as much as your Fiesta.

It depends on the person, I spent over 2k on my first car and the insurance was £1200. I made sure I didn't prang it and collected a years NCB, an old banger isn't necessary:p

I love my car, it may be an utter banger but it is my first car. Not everyone can afford a new car straight away. It does the job and i'm happy.:p
I'm very careful with it as i know that if anything happens to it then i'm going to have to pay for it.

You can TRY and be more careful in a more expensive car, but accidents happen regardless of how careful anyone is or tries to be.

Agreed, that an 'old banger' isn't necessary, but you can get plenty of 'first cars' for relatively small money. Again, it depends on the individual's outlook, but personally, I'm not sure I'd want to spend a few 000's on something when I know that as careful as I try to be, I am inexperienced and therefore statistically more likely to have an accident.

I see this quoted so many times on this forum and it annoys the hell out of me. Its not inevitable you will bump your first car. It shouldnt be anything close. Driving a car really is not that hard. How many people crashed whilst learning to drive? Hardly any I'll bet, yet as soon as some people pass their test, despite having much more skill than their first hour learning to drive, its deemed inevitable they will crash! The recent thread about written off cars shocked me. One guy had written off three cars - sorry but in my opinion that shows a total inability to control a car (or themseleves) and their license should have been revoked.

Not crashing is quite simple. Drive in a manor vaguely resembling the way you were taught. Dont drive the car on the limit on public roads. Drive to the road conditions - if the road is a bit greasy slow down. If you've even having to think about understeer or oversteer on poor quality roads you're going too fast. Pay attention to the road and other road users, rather than the latest ICE installation (pet hate of mine).

Honestly, it may sound like a dull and boring way to drive, but it will help to keep your insurance premiums down whilst you build up some experience. Theres a time and a place for fun on the roads but it should be the exception not the rule. I like to rag the bike every now and again, but I'll only do it when I can minimise the risks as much as possible. If I rode the bike on the limit all the time I'd be in the ground, as so many others end up.

Sorry - gone on a bit of an off-topic rant there, but with so many OCUK accidents over the last week or so its only a matter of time before one is really serious or worse. Slow down guys!

You may notice i said bump, not destoy in a ball of fire. It is very easy to get a little scrape on things like wheely bins, not that i'd know that :o I'd be heartbroken if i scraped my shiney new car doing something silly like that.:)

I see what you mean but not everyone drives with a death wish! :D

In real life you dont spend 5 minutes adjusting your mirrors every time you reverse park etc etc.

Yeah i scratched my car on a narrow gate post that ive driven onto probably hundreds of times. Was 6 in the morning and i wasnt concentrating so my own fault.

And i had an accident when learning, someone went into the back of me at a junction! :p

FFS people, I know you don't like it, but some insurance company's (read, everyone single one I have asked, including elephant, NU, Bell and Direct Line) have all said being a named driver is fine even if you are the main driver.

Iv even had it friggin recommended to me over the phone by 2 company's when iv phoned for insurance. Can we get off high horses here and actually use facts instead of theoretical BS when it comes to this argument. I know there are some elitist morons on this forum who like to belittle new drivers who cant afford the ridiculous premiums, but your simply talking rubbish and tbh its made a few respected motors members seem quite stupid at some points.

Nice first car OP, i learnt to drive in my first year in the same kind of car, only my mum paid 9k for a brand new SXI not 3.5K :(

Ummm, id hate to break it to you but i was never aware of any stiffer springs on the SXI model, I think it was only the SRI model that had sportier suspension. The SXI I had handled like a boat.

Its a very nice car imo, very easy to drive, however its got little to no power whatsoever really, you'll soon want something you can drive properly when you get bored, took me about 6 months to.

Hahaha, I want whatever you are smoking agw :D

I earn £450 a month whilst still being a full time student, £150 goes on the insurance. I'm living happily and never have to go cap in hand to my parents.

Corsa SXi's body roll like mad and the Corsa's SRI's were hardly rapid and didn't handle aswell as it's main competitors, the Fiesta Zetec-S and Saxo VTS.

It's a nice looking car but what happens when the insurance discover your mum has another car when you go to claim?

:D Well I was working in a pub, so while I wasn't actually smoking, I was doing an awful lot of passive smoking :p :(

It's only money at the end of the day. I had a nice first car and I was proud of it.

Nice first car for a young lad.

Lose the gash fuel cap, colour code arches and skirts, and start your very own P6000 tyre fire, and it'll be even nicer.
