Bought an old BMW M3, filled with regret...

Hence the box of hair-dryers, duh!

Today has been a perfect day for convertible driving. The induction noise is just excellent. Hope tomorrow is the same, up at Evolve getting the remap done, which I'm quite excited about.

What do you mean remap, whats that all about?

Also how do i update the sat nav as its got a cd in the drive in the boot from 2006?

Thanks

Does this mean you actually came to Luton? :D

There are two aspects, the firmware and the maps...

The maps are easy, that's just getting hold of the latest 2016 maps.. do a google, you can buy them from various people/ebay or it is feasible to do your own.

The firmware update requires burning firmware to a disk and popping that in the DVD player, there are instructions around for that..

Mine came with latest firmware but 2009 maps, so I have upgrade the map disk to 2016 (still not so useful).

Make sure you get all the ECU bits I did redone (shift lights, speed governers etc), the Evolve maps are locked down so I don't believe you can do them afterwards :)

Thanks for that very useful, do i just google any 2016 maps or are they specific to the device?
Any links for firmware appreciated

Of course!

Ah nooo! I was wondering what they meant by "we've added the shift lights and Sport button memory for your at no cost". Does this mean the speed limit removal and warmup lights = oil temp have been undone then? I'll have to phone them to find out!

Anyway, here are the results, pink is before, blue is after:

The bulk of the power gain is in the 6krpm+ range, which is fine and what was expected from a naturally aspirated engine.

Nice gains for a naturally aspirated car :)

Whats the rev limiter set too now? Is it a safe increase?

8250 iirc, I'd assume so given it's their standard Stage 1 map that's been tweaked over the years! Going by owner reviews, no complaints from what I can see, that's going back from posts in 2010 to now.

This is what they do:

I'd double check with them, I've had issues reading a mates car after it'd been Evolve Alpha-N'd so maybe the lock them down to prevent people from copying their map and selling it on.

I believe they can do the changes remotely so hopefully if it's disappeared, it should be an easy job for them without having to take it back there.

Ah mine isn't an alpha n, mine is custom to this car. They read the existing software to file, then make the map changes and re upload. So I'm guessing then the customisations you did will transfer over each way!

I'll find out in the morning during the cold start. Can't test the speed limiter of course for legal reasons :p

Nice gains! How's the car feel to drive? I'm not too far from them, would have been nice to see the mrk mobile in the flesh!

Perhaps my next trip to Luton as I have family in Dallow Road!

Car feels the same just driving around town or cruising. The above mentioned differences are felt when accelerating within both respective rev ranges. The engine responds a bit sharper all round though I'd say, which seems inline with the after line on the graph.

Strangely I've managed 27.8MPG today. I've never seen it that high after a traffic filled motorway journey with lots of stop go traffic.

The other good thing about the dyno run is knowing your engine is in tiptop condition, no head gasket woes or other niggly issues!

I'm trying to the urge to tinker with mine. I was going to replace MAF, do a Vanos solenoid pack just as a matter of precaution before modding and tuning, as those are easy jobs that will need doing at some point going by the forums.

Mrk, you've obviously model the inlet side with your induction kit, but what about exhaust?

I won't be touching the exhaust as to my ears it's just right the way it is. I've heard many exhaust options now both online and offline and really none of those sounded as natural as the stock one. The only reason to change it would be weight savings since the stock box weighs 25KG and aftermarket ones are half that. I've got the Supersprint style exhaust tips installed though with body coloured CSL diffuser, so the back end is finished off nicely.

Exhaust manifolds yield more performance gains though, but are also costly. Think I'm sorted on the mods side of things now anyway. I have everything I wanted done :D

VANOS solenoid should be something I will start thinking about in the near future, just had an Inspection 2 done and nothing flagged up, so should be good for quite some time yet I reckon.

Yeah I remember you mentioning Dallow Road at one of the Dyno Day meets.

Good to see the map is useful then re mpg!

How accurate was the read out from the Evolv dyno compared to the powerstation one? I'm sure you made around 340 on the last day?

Good shout on Rejex earlier! Applied it last night and this morning noticed no window creaking at all :D

Gonna apply it to the roof beam rubber joints where they rub too this evening I think.

No idea which is more accurate to be honest. I was expecting to get around 330 at Powerstation but got more, other cars got higher than expected figures too IIRC. This is the thing with rollers, they will all give different results.

Evolve's base run for the stock E46 M3 is around 328BHP based on all the ones they've done. The guy said they had one E46 M3 in which ran 290HP, so something was wrong. Upon inspection they found cam timings were out, adjusted, re-ran and it did 321HP. According to them, not many E46 M3s make exact factory power these days, at least on their rollers!

Whatever the dyno brand variations may be, some 20HP has been gained since there is a before/after at the same place with the same operator. Evolve say +15 to 18HP is typical for a stage 1 remap, so mine has done a little better I guess, probably due to having the Eventuri.

I had my Vanos checked, i have a data sheet for it, all looking good according to stats. mrk how much was that rolling road thing? Did this test the full BHP?

Also i too love the original sound of the exhausts, i wont be changing mine, now way!

I'm not sure what you mean by full bhp?

The dyno runs were included in the remap purchase though.
