Bournemouth Deaths

Watching rip tide in action real nasty think you have to float to survive them I watched video ages ago, sadly another tragic incident here.

Float or swim parallel to the shore to try and escape it rather than trying to go against the current AFAIK.

Maybe they've arrested the father of the 12 year old? Would explain keeping shtum. And perhaps they're just at that boat for witness statements.

e: oh, ignore that: "Police said they were from separate groups visiting the beach and the arrested man was not known to them."

Lifeguard arrested for allowing people to swim in a forbidden zone? That’s my best guess.

The lack of info does encourage speculation… people had an incident in the sea, someone was arrested from manslaughter… no further details. I mean, it could be almost anything!

I think that might count as causing the issue. ;)

Manslaughter effectively means negligence that has led to unintended death, so causing death by accidentally hitting someone with a boat, as @dowie suggested, could be a reason for an arrest of manslaughter.

There isn’t generally a duty for anyone to save anyone in this country, unless a person is in a position of responsibility or is responsible for the situation… so merely watching events unfold isn’t necessarily enough to land a manslaughter charge.

Of course, an arrest doesn’t have to lead to charge and a charge doesn’t have to lead to a conviction. So he could have not assisted and the arrest was made to find out more details, etc.

I read that the 40 year old was talking the kids into jumping off the pier. Whilst an incredibly irresponsible thing to do I don't see how it could be an arrestable offence.

Terrible event though. The sea is not a place to take lightly.

Is anyone familiar with that beach and know if riptides form there?

I must admit I've only ever seen it once in this country, and even that one would only take you out maybe 25 yards, fair enough if you can't swim that's dangerous.

A spokesperson for Bournemouth council said seafront staff attended and assisted in the incident, which saw the man hospitalised. They said jumping from the pier is “both prohibited and extremely dangerous and seafront staff work with the police to enforce this bylaw wherever possible”.3 Aug 2016

but..

Dorset Police said there was no contact with a jet ski or boat and no-one jumped from the pier.

so..?

Aren't you quoting 2 different instances? one from 2016 and the latest one?

Falling or being pushed doesn't equal jumping.

Well is that just speculating or has there been some more info?

it probably will be something like that in the end.

Were the kids being annoying little ****s or is the 40 year old guy just a bit of a psycho or a mixture of both>?

yes obviously.

It was illegal to jump off the pier in 2016 and the police said they didnt jump off the pier in 2023... i thought that was pretty straightforward.
Ahh, my bad didn't read the post you were replying to properly. Thought most people knew it's illegal to jump off piers in the UK,
