Boxing Day Footie *spoilers be inside*

Cant agree - Masch has been shocking all season - reckless tackles, especially outside the box, awful passing. He can only pass it sideways. Its a blessing in disguise he is injured - if we can get > £20 million for him (seems unlikely now) then we should sell him.
Sorry but thats a load of nonesense and I'm flabbergasted that someone could honestly come to that conclusion after actually watching him play this season, especially supporters who closely follow the games.

Masch this season, apart from the first few games when he seemed frustrated and angry at times, has played the best he's ever played IMO. He's also showed more work rate and heart than any other Liverpool player during the soul destroying string of defeats we had, while Gerrard had his head down in the grass, not doing a captains job. He's been there, chasing every ball down and fighting for everything all season. He was also the first over when Lucas was in a bit of trouble during the derby while Gerrard was strolling around looking like a lost child. He's got great captaincy potential and as he matures and learns to control himself a bit, I can easily see him being captain of a major club in the future.

Mascherano has coped tremendously well seeing that Alonso isn't next to him, thus the need for him to adapt and spread the ball increased, and so his passing has improved tenfold because of the bigger role and added responsibility. If you honestly can't see that then I dont believe you've bothered to watch the games this season and are commenting based on his summer transfer antics.

Baffled

Lucas has been far better than him - his passing is sharper and hes trying to run forward with the ball - something Masch doesnt do well. Masch was great last season but i thnk now is the right time to sell.
No, Lucas hasn't been better than him. While I think Lucas has played some of his best football for us this season, he's still far from the DM Masch has been this season.

Seems i disagree with most on here but fair points - but i guess this raises the question - what is Lucas's role then ? DM ? Creative midfielder?

I guess im of the ilk that feel footballers should be all round good - total footballers. I dont like to see players who can only break up play and not be able to pass/shoot well - regardless, our midfielders apart from Yossi have to pitch in with more goals - something i can never see masch/ lucas do!

Have to agree about Gerrard tho - i think he has been living on his reputation this season and really needs to dig in - he has been given too much praise in recent times for too many below par performances.

Although he can do it (and IMO his best role), the 1 thing he hasn't been when playing alongside Masch is a DM.

When he's played with Masch he looks to get forward at every opportunity and regularly you'll see him breaking into the box. The problem is, he's not close to being as good as somebody like Gerrard at breaking into the box nor can he knock the ball about like Alonso.

To be fair to him, he's looked far better this season than he has in the past and is becoming a handy player to have in the squad (as above, more as cover for Masch imo). He clearly has his limitations though and having to be the offensive player from our CM highlights those.

Jammy sods - best Ive seen them play against a Top 4 team and thats not saying much when it comes to Liverpool this season...

Cant wait for the Liverpool fans to elate about how good they were :/

ps3ud0
We weren't great, but we were better than villa. We've had rotten luck all season and now we're "jammy" for getting a late goal in an important game
I just get worried when we play masch and lucas together in the middle, the ball goes across rather than up the pitch :p
Agreed, it doesn't work.

How old is Lucas? I can never tell because he looks a bit odd. He's clearly improving and if he's young he'll have a good future ahead of him. Reminds me a bit of Denilson

Not at all- Mascherano offers nothing going forward - stupid petulant fouls have cost us so much this season from set pieces - skrtel and masch have been the worst culprits.

Alonso did his fair share of tackling as well as some great passing during his time at anfield - he has left a massive creative hole in the centre of our midfield - mascherano and lucas have to step up - yes they have to get the tackles in - but now they have to create too and i think lucas is doing a far better job than mascherano. The lack of goals from our midfield is shocking - these two have to get on the scoresheet if we are to climb up the table. I have seen palacios play recently for spurs - he makes the crap tackle here and there but his passing and forward play is much better - something our players should try to emulate.

Skrtrel has just been awful since his injury at man city last season - apart from his goal recently he has made so many mistakes its unbelievable - Although Sami was old (and slow) - his positional sense saved our backside so many times - skrtels is just shocking. Why rafa got rid i do not know - maybe krygiakos should be given a chance.

People on here know I'm not Masch's biggest fan.

I'd disagree with what you've said though, you don't have Masch in the side to be anything other then a terrier in the middle of the pitch, someone with energy, to press space, close down players and win the ball. I don't think it's right either to slate him for not doing enough going forward he does so much work defensively which in turn lets Liverpool get forward.

His passing is fairly poor, but it doesn't need to be very good, he picks up the ball passes it left or right and then goes about his job. There is a very good reason he's top of the tackles / passes stats. It's ALL his game is about, he doesn't need to worry about any other part of his game. (other then maybe his temper)

Villa come to draw, or not lose against the bigger teams. In their best period , 1st half of last season, they were so good because they just attacked, everyone, there were a few losses but they were great.

Liverpool 1-3 Aston Villa
Aston Villa 2-1 Chelsea
Man Utd 0-1 Aston Villa

Yeah, we go defensive against big teams. Do one, mate. All the *****ty little teams like Birmingham/Wolves etc will just try and park the proverbial bus and pray not to concede. We actually go at teams to try and win.

Of course it was jammy - didnt you see the goal, when you scored and the 10mins leading upto it - perhaps Im biased saying Villa deserved to win, more likely neither of us did enough and it led to a piece of luck to allow you to score...

Who doesnt have rotten luck over a season - go and cry over your red beachball :p
PS - i see ps3udo has gone into hiding :p
Oi I was playing FIFA Club :p. Scoring from corners for fun Ill have you know ;)

Gotta love tinted glasses:p

Neither team deserved to win in reality, there were very few clearcut chances at either end, we had pretty much all of the ball and Villa just parked the bus, and hit us on the break. Villa had about 10 mins where they did take the game to us.It was a pretty a poor game, Torres looked so frustrated, his sharpness just isnt there at the moment, but im sure 'he'll get his mojo back:p'

I just want us to learn how to pass the ball without making mistakes, the right side is a problem for us, Johnson is so careless its crazy, Kuyt needs to look up everynow and then. Im pleased with Aquilani so far, good touch decent passing ability, I noticed he was dictating things in the middle of the park, telling people where to pass etc.

All in all, a much needed win, confidence will be higher now, a result against the yids will put us back in the mix.

1933: Now then, observants among you will have noticed that there are no Englishmen in either starting line-up at Fratton Park tonight. That, apparently, has never happened in the Premier League before. Ever.

That actually worries me. :(

"Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson makes one change to the side that beat Hull 3-1 just two days ago - the 99th consecutive match in which the Scot has not retained the same starting XI - as Ji Sung Park is picked in place of Ryan Giggs, who does not even make the bench."

NINETY NINE?!?

I knew he was addicted to squad rotation but that is just ridiculous. And Park :( Why is Park starting ahead of Obertan??

Couldn't care less. They're either way over priced, egotistical children or just not available of the same quality and technical ability.
