Brazilian Grand Prix 2012, São Paulo - Race 20/20

Looking at that still shot you can just make out the dry line, Vettel is off the racing line more than Senna is and he is turning in across the other cars.

Its lap 1, there isn't a dry line.

Grab a screen shot from a second before that to see just how far back and off line Senna came from.

Fed up with the "Vettel investigations". He won. Twas a tall order for Fernando to fulfil and he did the best he could.

Who I really feel sorry for is Massa.
He drove the perfect "Team-race" and knew that he would have finished at least 2nd.

In fact, I'd go so far as to say that had he not been ordered to "drive down" to stay behind Alonso, for all we know he could have challenged Jenson ?

Yes I know he was 20 odd seconds down the road but had Massa been unleashed he may well not have been that far back.

I think that's why PM was so choked up on the podium.

Massa has out qualified and out raced Alonso a number of times in the latter half of this season. I really hope he takes that through to next year as the only way he's going to get Ferrari to back him for a title bid is if he out performs Alonso right from the start of the season.

If that happens, pigs will start flying, hell will freeze over and taxation will be abolished, all in the same year.

Best driver in F1, out performed by Massa? :D

Agreed can't see it but Massa is a lot closer now but it's a bit skewed as they are often running different cars as Ferrari even up to Brazil had no idea what was working and not LOL

Massa on form and happy with the car will give Nando a good challenge and even beat him now and then but overall I would expect Alonso to win out over a season.

He has. I agree.
But for every time Massa outperforms Alonso, Alonso outperforms Massa 3 times. Massa is a decent driver, but he won't ever wear the mantle of "best driver in F1", which Alonso currently holds.

Why did Vettel turn in so aggressively? A second or so before he's pointing towards the front, then in one move he swipes across one car before hitting another.

Not sure where you are getting 'swiped across from' He was ahead of that Force India all the way down and he was always going to make the turn. That overhead angle actually makes it look worse, you watch the clip after from Vettel's car he isn't too different from Alonso's line until closer to the apex of the corner where he indeed does cut a bit more. However looking at that aerial view it also looks like there was room the other side of Senna (look at Hulk infront and some of the others behind) who run either on the white line or two wheels on the curb itself so there was some room to manouvere.

The reason for going out slightly wider (again as Alonso does) and then coming in on the corner is to get maximum traction through and out the turn.

It still should have been investigated. IMO it would have been classed as a lap 1 racing incident and that is that.

Vettel was off the racing line, most likely as there would be more grip there. He did leave a gap and Senna went for it - 50/50 blame imo.

Make no mistake, when Massa is on form, he is seriously quick. Look how close he was to winning the title in 2008.

He just needs to do it at the right time. Its no good being faster than Alonso for the final third of a year when all Ferrari's eggs are already in the Alonso basket. I hope next year starts off well for him. With Hamilton pretty much written off next year we need another driver or 2 to take the fight to Vettel and Alonso.

Well, this is my first chance to post since the race. I must say, that was one of my favourite races in a while, Brazil sure does deliver.

Can't believe how lucky Vettel was with his car - regardless, he drove very well yesterday. 4th WDC seems easily within his reach.

Hmm, having watched that over head shot a few times Senna was 3 cars and a long way back from Vettel and went for the gap with a serious lunge. Its not like Vettel deliberately turned in on someone he knew was there, he just took the racing line as Senna went in deep.

It should have been investigated as it took out 2 people, but I agree it would have been a 1st lap racing incident. For all we know the FIA could have had a look and decided that was the case without sending out the notification that it was under investigation?

That's what I thought as well. Lol at the screenshot.

Fist corner in the middle of a pack of cars, no one owns the corner, end of.

Senna lunged up the inside as he saw a gap, just like a typical in experienced driver does (exactly like Roman and Pastor have done through out the season).

At the same time Vettle came across to make the apex of the turn to shut the door as any driver would do.

Racing incident like others have said, the start was messy. Hell the entire race was a complete mess until the last 9 or 10 laps.

This. It's fine discussing the details but everyone needs to conclude that the first corner of the first lap is anyone's. In the senna vettel incident they were both to blame. Nothing more to it, end of story.

If Massa wins the first couple of races next year, Ferrari would have to back him for the title, surely?

Absolutely not. Wouldn't that be like backing Liverpool to win the prem next year if they have a better start over Utd. Both are past champions but regardless Alonso is #1 massa is not.

Kimi was number 1 and yet Massa seemed to take on that role in 2008.

I would hate to see Massa told to move over for Alonso if Massa was leading Alonso in the championship.
