Britain's Defences

Bit silly to retire the ark. When the new carriers are in service is there going to be anybody around who actual has served on a carrier? If the ark goes then the harriers are next.

Why are they getting rid of the newer flagship of the navy and not Illustrious?

Just because she's under refit? If AR goes now, Illustrious isn't due back till somepoint next year.

They spent millions on the Ark Royal just a few years ago too.

I can't help but think this is all a bit too muddled. Knee jerk.

I also don't like the dribs and drabs newsbites that are coming out, bit by bit.

Is there no concise plan?

Is it really policy on the hop?

I think its leaking of policy rather then the whole picture, I live in hope that once we see the whole thing I wont be as worried.

Agreed. I take everything regarding military cuts in the media with a pinch of salt. Wait for the official announcement.

Well the "official" line is going to come from DC himself seeing as he is the only guy with the authority really and it has all devolved into a Whitehall bun-fight between the Army, Navy, RAF and NSC. With the treasury also stating that trident replacement be covered by MoD funds it's all become a little silly what with all these "leaks" coming out. Love the forces; absolute rumour-ville!

Is this all supposed to be concluded today? Or is it the 20th?

thought that myself, isn't the ark the most morden of the 3?

Its a shame to see her taken out of active service but something needs to be done to sort out the finances.

I cant imagine they would have taken the decision lightly but I'd rather have the two new ones than not. At least they are being built.

Might sound like a broken record but this feels like the late 70's early 80s all over again. Carriers scraped before the new ones are built. Anybody remember the name of the carrier that got the chop back in the 70's before the new ones were out, 50 points for the correct answer. Expect more noise and rumblings from the south atlantic

To be honest Ark Royal was never a true carrier, it was meant to be a helicopter landing platform and so I'm not too bothered about it, I mean it only harriers that operate off them and it looks like they will be scrapped, I would rather mothball Ark Royal and get the 2 new carriers later.

Thing that annoys me is that they are not naming one of the carriers Ark Royal, I think this is a great shame.

Feel the sentiment. Always had a soft spot for carriers named ark royal after the deeds of Force H during the ww2.

Thing is, with RAF Mount Pleasant, the RAF Typhoons, the VC10 for refuelling, the big garrison, the Royal Navy Frigate / Destroyer presence, I'm not sure Ark Royal would be of that much use. Remember also that Argentina's military is a fraction of what it was.

PS, don't we still have HMS Illustrious in service?

Am gutted at the Harriers being cut - loved those aircraft. If Lossiemouth closes and we lose some GR4 squadrons it will be even worse.

Then again this is just the opinion of an aviation geek and the whole defence capability is another side of things.

I think that the only good news is that the new carriers, atleast the 1st will have traditional arestor gear. But this makes me think that the 2nd carrier will be sold to india.
