**British Armed Forces Discussion Thread**

i've been going through the process of applying for the army at them moment.
i had my interview today, all went well, got my date for 2nd interview.
did my BARB couple weeks back, the jobs i wanted were all open to me.
going for Royal Artillery.
just need to keep working on my fitness and bringing my 1.5mile time down.

begbie, honestly mate dont worry about it, when you get into the interview they make you feel comfortable and at ease.
the advise that was given to me, just make sure you know your job choices, your 1.5mile time and how many heaves you can do, above all answer any questions honestly.
and obviously, make sure you turn up on time and dress clean and smartly.
shirt, tie, shoes polished, etc just try to make a good impression like you would in any other job interview.

just keep going with the running and the press ups and sit ups. Follow the program they give you. Start early and train for the PFT (mile and a half and sit ups press ups). They will take care of the rest of your training. The fitter you turn up the easier it will all be. Trust me :). Not an expert when it comes to basic training but if anyone has any queries about Officer training in the army im currently going through it so let me know.

How did you find the AOSB briefing and main board? From what I understand main board is pretty tough. Were the topical discussions about really REALLY current news (say the credit crisis)? Any tips

I presume you are at RMAS, how you finding it?

Yep. Im in my second term. Its good...hard work but very good :).

AOSB isnt hard, its got its challenging moments but as long as you put the prep in, and you have the right qualities, you should be fine. For current affairs read newspapers for a couple of months before you go. Read the week at a bare minimum.

Make sure you can do the mile and a half, the press ups and the sit ups. You would be surprised but people turn up not able to do it, they then get sent straight home having wasted one of their two chances at the board. You need to be able to do the sit ups and press ups straight after the run.

I remember before i went people were giving me the cliched advice of "just be yourself", they were completly right. Its very difficult from the side of the fence to say any more. Give it your all, prep like its the only thing you want and if you have the qualities they look for then you will pass. Its a difficult job, AOSB is just the start of the challenges; beyond it lies some of the most difficult but rewarding experiences i have ever had.

Good luck.

i did my briefing at the start of september, got a cat2 12 months so didnt do to well.

Make sure you practice the bleep test for it, i found it a lot more difficult than doing a 1.5 mile run. The current affairs question we were asked about were very recent. Stuff like credit crisis, Russia georgia situation etc.

As you have probably been told countless times just be yourself

Why do you reckon you got Cat2? Because of the bleep test? You going to go for it again in 12 months?

You go straight to main board after those 12 months not to briefing. The brief is just there to give you the knowledge you need to pass. Usually its 6 months for physical reasons so he either was appalling at the phys or there was something else.. ie await the results of some exams.

Does anyone on this forum happen to be in the INT Corps, because i have a question. Basicaly i have been focused on the signals Com Sys Eng trade, as its closest to the field of IT that i have interest in (and am studying a degree in), but i noticed that on the INT Corps website at army.mod.uk it says there are many specialisations including IT Security, now the problem is website only gives details about human intel, signal intel, EW and image intel, it doesnt give any more info about IT Security.

So my question is, does anyone have any real info about the IT security role, like is it a trade you can pick up during phase 2? or is it something you get into many years down the line, and how big a job is it (ie, do they only need IT security people when a breach of security has been found, or do they need IT security people all the time)?

I did exactly this but too many years ago to be of any assistance to you. So much has changed since I left. You're asking all the right questions but to get meaningful and up-to-date answers you will have to visit the Int Centre. I don't know what stage you are at (not having read the whole thread) but you may be best asking the recruiting centre to arrange a visit for you.

Dunno about that as it depends upon whether a persons done the aptitude tests or cranditz officer 'material'. I can only say it's more straightforward if you're already an officer. I know a couple of people in their late twenties who've branched across to become helo pilots - one an air trafficker like me and another who was an engineering officer.

Actually, I know another guy (mid twenties) who went from newly endorsed Sgt Controller (he was one of my students!) and is now going through Cranwell in order to become a heavies pilot.

I know a guy that I did trade training with as a Steward remustered to Pilot.
We ended up in the Same mess and he passed His PPL after being in a couple of Years etc. unluckily for him He got posted back to the same camp after doing his Flying training and half the staff where still calling him my his 1st name ( as we'd promised to do)
TBH he was too posh and educated to be in the ranks and only joined as a Steward to upset his parents

Ah the Int Corps, appropriately nicknamed Green Slime/Slime Corps. I'll say no more :p

Thread revival.

I went to afco today for a laugh to talk about the engineers.

Was very interesting to say the least, although they are very picky with recruitment now because they are almost full and there have been loads of applicants recently (probably some credit crunch thing) and once where pretty much most of applicants got in, you have to be pretty good at selection and interview stages now, they sort of cherrypick the best

thread revival indeed!

christ was it really that long ago i was applying?
i've just passed phase 1! off to phase 2 in just over a week, i havnt looked back since i started applying, the best thing i've done with my life so far!!!
if its something you want, stick with it mate!

Royal Artillery, light gun.
phase 1 is basic training, 14 weeks of fun! basic soldiering skills etc. its hard graft but its a good laugh.
phase 2 is basicly trade training, where you learn to do your job role
depending on the job you may have a phase 3 or even 4.

Any idea if the ammount of people joining will die down in the future, or will it just become more and more selective as the time goes on?
