**British Armed Forces Discussion Thread**

Yeh I know, I'm not expecting a start date of anytime til April.

Wouldn't mind knowing when that starting date is though sooner rather than later. lol

Don't want to get to christmas and still not know when basic is going to be.

I wouldn't mind if they phoned me up and told me, yeh May 2010... then at least I know .. It's the not knowing :)

Having to sit around waiting for trade training to start whilst stuck on trainee pay = :(

I'm told that because there was such a surge in recruitment (I guess this is due to allowing so many numb skulls in) there is a huge back log of new recruits awaiting basic training and then trainees stuck in limbo after their basic training who are awaiting slots on trade training after that. Hope this isn't the case for you but thought it best people be pre-warned.

Well I've seen that first hand and I can tell you it is absolutely awful. A couple of months ago it was crammed beyond capacity. 4 man rooms sleeping 6 or more men, sharing locker space. Mess queues like I've never seen. Pants, just pants.

P.s zefan.... Are you stalking me :p

:D

Yeh my thoughts exactly.

It sounds like it's been passed onto a debt collection agency. I'll phone up student loans tomorrow and ask them why they given me too much money and why I'm expected to just pay £1000 back just like that

To those in the armed forces, did the teething problems with SA80s get ironed out ?

Aa chum of mine was in the army when they first came out in the late 80s and the sights fogged up, parts broke off and they often jammed.

from Wiki article.... though with a decline in reliability in hot, and especially hot and dry conditions

Nice to know that the SA80 performs admirably.... in all the areas we currently use it in!

Still, to be fair to it I didnt see many/any stoppages on the Ross Kemp footage, so it's probably no worse than any equivalents.

Steyr Aug beats it hands-down for coolness, and probably always will :D

But you're still held at recruit/trainee pay. If you're in the RAF you're on AC pay until you complete your trade training. You could be sat waiting for trade traiing for a long time.

I got the payrise from AC to LAC pay rise after 6 months in the RAF, and I finish my trade training in Feburary and so did everyone else I know.

*edit*

Zefan makes it clearer below.

You're right that you get it after completing trade training, however if you're still in training then you get LAC pay after 6 months.

:edit: Gah beaten :p

Most if not all weapons perform worse when in that sort of environment.

They occur way more often than you'd think, even in moderate climates :o
