**British Armed Forces Discussion Thread**

Army most likely. Would have liked to do AAC but I'm going to need glasses in the next year I reckon. :(

Speaking of such careers, I'm currently doing an MSc in finance. Is this going to raise any flags at such a change?

i got an raf interview this monday for logistics supplier, any tips from the raf folks on here?

Wow so there are some newbies coming in then!

I did 13 years in as a Supplier, left the service 18 months ago and I'm still in the mix working for BAE Systems (same job, different clothes pretty much). So if you have any questions, feel free to ask.

I am attending an interview on Monday as a Regiment Gunner. Cannot wait, hope I can prove myself worthy for it. Been putting off this career for too long, and needed to take the plunge for it before it was too late. So yeah, they are still recruiting :D

Out of curiosity, what is it that draws you to the RAF reg specifically?

Have wanted to be a part of the RAF for a long long time, ever since a youngster. Wanted to be a pilot, as all children do, obviously, but was unable to do that. So as long as I can become part of that I will be a happy man. I know they get a bad press from other parts of the services some times, but they do what they do and they do it well.

I wouldn't say the RAF Regt aren't quite like the rest of the RAF, they are much closer to the Army when it comes to attitude and day to day working life.

Not to say there's anything wrong with that, still have a couple of mates in the RAF Regt, and they do have some good opportunities while you're in for doing some very interesting things. Not as good when it comes to getting a job after you come out though.

Just as long as you don't consider yourself to be 'elite' once you finish your RAF Regt training, you'll be fine. Well, except getting banter for most of your career from the rest of the forces :p.

I say 'elite' in comparison to Marines and Para, so maybe not that elite :p.

Evening mate, I am RAF Regt, if you've any questions send us a trust message and I'll see what I can tell you.

The only people "allowed" to ridicule the RAF regt are marines and paras, but what really ends up happening is all the pretend soldiers who wear any other cap badge seem to think they can do it too. Most who do are just having banter ofc, but you also meet many who really believe their opinion is valid/true, when really they are REMF MOFOs like 95% of the rest of the military.

Go for RAF Regt and enjoy. Best of luck.

To be fair, anyone can ridicule anyone in my eyes. As long as they can take ridicule themselves and not complain.

Also, I don't pretend to be a solider, I hate the green stuff, I just love the tech side. It's the other muppets who run the Signals that seem to think Signals are infantry lol.

I understand the hard time they get, I have done a lot of research recently, and it has not put me off. There is a particular part, which I would consider being up there with the best, but I do not think I would be able to get to that, yet. Perhaps in the future.

Thanks for the post Sherpa, anything comes up in the next few days I will let you know, just got to get through this first interview and go from there really.

Finding the physical side of it difficult at the moment, but I have not done any real form of exercise for a long time, so it is just getting back into the swing of it. I am so dedicated to getting in though, I have left my day job so I can go for multiple runs per day, well, more like jogs at the minute but my stamina is increasing every time, so will be officially 'running' soon hopefully.

After a months leave I started my new job yesterday.
Still paid by the army till March so two wages for the next 3 months will be a little treat (for me and the tax man)

Feels great to "almost" be a civvie :)

5 miles of death standing toe to toe with the paras and marines....

:) Only messing, who was that guy, he is very famous these days.

Just a video online of an instructor giving the lads a talking to before they start their final test, a 5 mile endurance match followed by a shoot. He's a complete arse though, looks like a sack of **** with hands in his pockets and stuff. Goes on to say that this 5 mile is the equivalent of what the Para's and Marines do at the end of their training.. Which considering it's less that a CFT, is pretty ridiculous.

I have an initial interview on Thursday for the army (reg soldier), does anybody have any tips for it? How much prior knowledge about military awareness are they expecting? I'm reading up on phase 1 and trade training, selection process, values, operations/deployments and a bit about the corps history (I want to join the R.E.).
Thanks :)

I knew nothing when I turned up. I'd do a bit of research on the trades available in the RE. Pick the one you want to do and don't budge on it.
Also, don't let them talk you into another trade with the proviso that you'll be able to change later. This is them just trying to fill a trade that is undermanned. You'll probably not be able to change to your preferred trade, for a good few years, if at all.

Best of luck
