**British Armed Forces Discussion Thread**

I have an initial interview on Thursday for the army (reg soldier), does anybody have any tips for it? How much prior knowledge about military awareness are they expecting? I'm reading up on phase 1 and trade training, selection process, values, operations/deployments and a bit about the corps history (I want to join the R.E.).
Thanks :)

What trade you aiming for?

I'm currently in the RE, will be happy to answer any questions if I can...

I knew nothing when I turned up. I'd do a bit of research on the trades available in the RE. Pick the one you want to do and don't budge on it.
Also, don't let them talk you into another trade with the proviso that you'll be able to change later. This is them just trying to fill a trade that is undermanned. You'll probably not be able to change to your preferred trade, for a good few years, if at all.

Best of luck

Where are they? They do ask on your interview, can you see them if you have a long sleeve shirt on?

Loads of guys in the RAF have full sleeve tats, a friend even got his finger done and got nothing more than a telling off.

Not sure if RAF stuff applies here, if I have a medical condition which restricts me to join the RAF, does that exclude me from all sectors of the RAF ?

As a military personnel? I would think so, best speaking to the AFCO though.

My best friend recently sent me a few amazing pics of him flying in his Hawk with 3 others, cruising along at 44,000ft, and I have to say, he's made an amazing career choice and has done amazingly well to get where he is. Next stop for him is the Typhoon I believe. I'd have loved to get into the RAF, but colour blindness meant I was going to be pretty restricted..

Unfortunately you can got half a sleeve done which can be covered up but got one on the palm of my hand (the part of my hand where it is is called thenar i think)

Then one on my neck :( which was a stupid mistake and regretted it soon as i had it done been looking to get it removed.

Im a sparky. Been in since 2010, been at regiment just over year and half so not a sweat by far :p

As for selection, basically just don't worry about it, it's pretty easy in the grand scheme of things, just go there and do what you have to do.

Going for sparky you will do a maths test so maybe have a quick look over gcse a-c style maths if you havent done anything like that for a while, but its a doddle of a test.

Get as fit as possible for selection and basic training, it will look good on you the fitter you are, you don't need to be super fit to get through selection or phase 1 but it makes life easier the fitter you are.

Have a smart suit for the final interview at selection. Look smart, keep your head down, do what is asked, smash the phys and you will ace it.

Nice one that makes me feel more confident hearing that :) I'll get on the maths and keep on with the cardio and gym (sit ups, pull ups and the like) and keep you updated after selection!

Yeah the one on your neck will be an issue, mate had one behind his ear that he cut(?) out. It didn't look to pretty anyway.
