**British Armed Forces Discussion Thread**

Lads for those serving then whats the current kit for Infantry? SA 80 Rifle what sort of scopes do you get? And how do you locate and target people on the ground? Is visibility not crap but just a standard scope? You know all those fancy bits of kit there is out there how much of it is used atm on the ground by the boys? There is NV for night but anything for the day? And you would only be given the NV kit going out on night patrol anyways yea?

Ive watched about 4 hours of GOPRO Syria footage and the one thing that stands out is you cannot see where bullets are coming from or where the shooter is. And when they do find em its a bunch of people behind a wall exchanging rounds with superior calibre AK's while half of them are not even firing. The supression is terrible everyone should be firing its almost as if ammo is a premium when they have drones and chinooks to drop off ammo.

When I was in the OTC, we had SUSAT sights for the SA80-A2. Not sure about actual operations though. :)

And in Syria, I could imagine that ammo is a premium for the rebels/armies as supply chains can't be that great?

Real life Isn't the same as call of duty or battlefield.

As for weapon sites, most will have Susat . And as for suppression, most of them wont know where the enemy are and will be afraid of getting killed if they stick their head over the wall to locate the enemy.

Hmm not sure what SUSAT is ill have a look on it but im guessing its just a normal zoom scope. In 2014 i cant see why they dont have a portable system with heat signatures to pick people out out on the battlefield. Maybe a portable system carried by the group leader?

And i meant more the Brits i watched than the Syrians with supression stuff like Ross Kemp and the countless hours of footage i watched theres more people behind walls and talking on radios than there is putting rounds down range hehe. The Syrians are the opposite they unload entire AK clips its just that its done about 20m over your head lol.

Susat is site unit small arms trilux, a fixed magnification site with a glowing reticle tip.

With the Syrians you're seeing untrained soldiers learning as they go along. Things you've seen with British and US soldiers show trained soldiers using drilled tactics to achieve an aim usually with the benefit of superior situational awareness and overwhelming firepower on call. Fighting in built up areas is very complicated, you need lots of soldiers and we lose our technical advantage somewhat in an urban area, but good drills can still win through for you.

Sorry to go all gun geek on you guys but they are standard issue weapon is the L85A2 not SA80. SA80 refers to the family of weapons.

There is even an L85A3 incorporating a strengthened rear TMH and lengthened sight rail.

Standard issue sight is the SUSAT (Sight Unit Small Arms, Trilux) which, IMO is gash. Better than iron sights though. Dismounted combat troops are (should) be getting ACOG's, Picatinny Rails, Down Grips and Surefire Flash Eliminators as a minimum though. Support staff will still use SUSAT.

The rifles you see with the Picatinny (quad) Rail and Down Grip/Bipod are modifications, ie an A1, A2 or A3 rifle direct from the factory will still have the green hand guard and Iron Sights Fitted.

It really is the most dull role in the forces isn't it :p
