How much did it used to cost to get out?

Back in the late 80's when I first joined up it was about 1 months wages so it was dependent on trade and pay band etc.

But then at one point in the mid/late 90's my trade also had a 18month PVR waiting list for lower ranks and 24months for SNCO.

I only know one person that managed to get out much quicker and that was because he got accepted into Devon & Cornwall Constabulary, and when told he would have to wait 12months and therefore loose his entry spot, he got a lawyer who threatened legal action so the RAF agreed to discharge him the day before he started his Civ Pol training, I think it was 6 months or so in the end.

Off to the FI on January the 11th. Hopefully that date doesn't change as i've sorted out my plans for Christmas! :) . The Falklands get a lot of bad press. Just keep busy and it's fine. Plenty to see and do, and there's always 4/6 months to smash the gym! Though i've heard it's hard to smuggle in alcohol from Stanley now! I need to come up with another little racket for this tour!

From what I've heard, it's really not hard to get smashed in the Falklands. Infact I know many people who managed it every single day for four months. You can always tell when someone gets back, their normally fatter than when they left. :p

Hi

I'm after some help for a mate. He is trying to join the royal Welsh. He's done his 2 days pre selection and he slipped on 1 question. It was why he wants to join the royal welsh. He tells me there is a specific answer he needs to give but doesn't know what it is or where to find it. Can anyone point me/him in the right direction before he goes back down. He's been told if he gets this stage sorted he'll start basic in either February or maybe June.

Thanks in advance

I thought they were fighting the removal of increments. They better had or there will be an exodus!

There is a massive fight over it at the moment, the independent review into it resulted in the independent reviewer being sacked. Go figure.

Also Catherine Spencer who's just stepped down as the Army Families Federation Chief Executive left swinging and kicking all the way out of the building:

One of the allowances i have heard is taking a hit is FIA. Think that is what it's called! So all the Sqn Ldr's / Wg Cdr equivalent across the service will have their allowences for their Flats in London hammered!

FIA is food and incidental allowance. Basically when the MOD can't provide accommodation it has to house people in private rented accomodation so as an offset of the individual not being able to use MOD facilities 24/7 they provide money to offset the cost. Used to be around £400 a month but then they stopped it if you lived within 3 miles of your place of work and have continued to hammer it over the past few years. Not sure how much it is worth these days.

The main one is the GYH - Get You Home pay, anyone who owns property away from their work place is entitled to an allowance that covers fuel costs for 2 trips per month to their home residence. If they scrap this there will be a lot of backlash.

That's the one! One of the guys i work with has been given a 3 bed semi-detatched house as there's no room left in the mess! There's also precious few houses left on the married patch. He pays the same bill as any of the lads the live in the mess. He did previously share the house with two others, though once has since been posted and the other is OOA. At one point they all recieved £300+ month each to live in the house. They were loving it, as they just cooked and prepped food together.

Yeah my ex paid around £85 a month for rent and utilities and council tax with £450 coming in from FIA. Loved it. Those days are almost gone now though

So lots of money for new equipment then, shame there'll be no-one left to use it.

I think when I left last year (did 20) it was just about the right time - Pensions will take a hit (AFPS15), stagnant pay for 5+ years, reduced/removed expenses & over-work/under-manning everywhere and looking to get worse etc.

I genuinely don't know why anyone would join up now unless it was only to get away from home.

The future looks bleak to be honest, however. I wouldn't want to do anything else! As soon as i can sign on for 22. I sure as hell will be! :)

I've just signed on for 22, even though we all say how overworked we are I would be sacked on civvy street for the amount of downtime we get inbetween jobs sometimes.

Don't get me wrong, a fair amount of the time its balls out grafting, but then I'm having 5 weeks off for xmas and have had weeks in work where I havent had to leave the office to actually do any work.

Swings and roundabouts really.

Because the grass isn't always greener. Apprenticeships just don't exist much anymore, apart from the military ones and at that they are still very good. A kid can leave school at 16, join the RAF and be on 28k a year when their 20.

With job security, and a pension. Not bad at all if you ask me.

We can't even claim a pint with a meal as part of daily subsistence any more. No alcohol will be included. Unless you're above the rank of Maj or you bend the receipts.
