**British Armed Forces Discussion Thread**

The pension trap is a strange one. Some people say they will stay in for like 8 year's of misery just to reach 22. Them 8 years spent in a well paid job would make up for the difference. I'll stay in the raf until I start to hate it.

In the meantime it suits me fine!

Agreed, but we weren't talking about 8, we were talking about 3 and that's very different.

Yeah I do think I would hang on for 3, because obviously that's not a significant time in the grand scheme. However if it was a huge payrise or much better lifestyle then I'd consider binning it.

Im on the newer scheme which although I know is crap compared to old, I have no idea of what figures are involved.

Its mad. Since the timescale changed on Dec 1st a lot of people got out on 30th of Nov.

I know of at least 8 people PVRing that night at lossie. lol

5 guys off my shift PVR'd the week before it went up to 12 months, countless more off the 3 other shifts on my sqn. Most have job offers already or are in interview process.

Not to mention the countless others at Brize on other squadrons/sections, I know the Hercs are having a big problem at the moment with people leaving.

But the RAF can't do **** to keep you in if you PVR and have a job offer even with the 12 months "wait", unless you have some kind of return to service against you due to training or something else.

1 letter to a lawyer with your situation and the RAF won't fight it, you're quickly told you can leave. Gilbert Blades love these cases.

Once my next posting is over I'm gone! Had enough.

Retention bonus, gone.
Lower pay band
Lower overall earnings

Wouldnt bother if I was you

after being a civvie for 2 years.. ill take anything tbh

I passed selection 6 weeks ago still awaiting a Basics start date....

I'm not sure where i land on that table.. i was RN for 5 years not sure if any of my previous experiences can come into play with the pay

Well those pay scales are an absolute joke, especially for armourers.

Lol and we all thought we might actually get a payrise

Yeah, its using this years figures as a demonstrative purpose but I cant see us getting more than the usual 1% in april.

losing top level for my rank, so thats a grand a year I'm going to be losing out on unless/until I get promoted and treading ground until then.

not sure how this is going to fufill its two apparent main goals either (retention problems and initial attraction)

Retention bonus, gone.
Whats the details on this, are they simply not offering it any more to new recruits and let it die out or are we all going to lose it in april? I cant find a proper answer.

Basic training you will be an LAC instead of an AC and your trade training I think you go to SAC. I think it puts you a level or so above your peers.

Erm apparently that was announced just before xmas, I remember someone talking about it but I'm certain it just relates to new recruits.

Either way I've taken both of mine so its irrelevant to me.

Oh forgot about AIP's too, thats another thing thats gone this year.

one of my mates raised a fair point, how many people are going to moan and threaten to bang out and how many will actually follow through?

Anyone here seriously considering it?

Yeah, could take my second @ 2.5 or wait 2 years and get the 7.5. obviously if it bins out this april I'd take the 2.5 over a kick in the teeth.

Nah, not considering it. my main concern is the rate in which we are already losing people and this, which for the last year or so has been waved by the higher ups as a saviour to retention and recruitment issues, is a limp fish for those issues and to some trades (not mine but others, inc ones with severe retention issues), a limp fish being slowly slapped across their face.

So even if it doesnt cause a spike in PVR's... it doesn't solve the PVR rate which is draining us anyway.

Seen a few of my mates bang out, on more wages then they ever would if they stayed in too. Plenty of jobs out there, just the job security is too good.

Its being phased out for new recruits, so you wont be affected. It was only a short paragraph that explains it in the NEM booklet from before xmas.

I've got a pic of the relevant chapter if you want me to upload it.

This is my problem, I want to earn more but I do enjoy the job and need the security at the mo.

While I've signed on for 22 I cant see me lasting now though.

Nah man, if you've got it as a reference, I can trust what your saying. Thanks

don't forget the actual amount of work you have to do :D. I'd escape if I got tired of the travel or got sent to a horrendous position but barring that, I'll stick with it as it is.
