**British Armed Forces Discussion Thread**

Military careers and opinions are dictated massively by the luck of your postings. Your life is literally in the hands of manning. Two people could join up together and within a couple of years have massively contrasting opinions on the military.

I've personally had a decent run and I enjoy it. I plan to move soon and hopefully it's a nice life too.

Upcoming budget changes and new employment model are shaking things up but financially I'm finding the raf pays me well for what is effectively the easiest job I've ever had since leaving school 15 Year ago.

To be fair though, the RAF doesn't really count as military :p

Very much this. I've had three promotions whereas most guys I joined with only had their one. Why? Well naturally I'm awesome :p but quite honestly it has been down to right place, right time, being in high profile jobs and doing some very cool things. Putting your hand up and volunteering has no doubt helped me in that and sure, I've even been labelled a brown nose sometimes. No cares, I now write those people's reports and delegate them their jobs :p

What's wrong with you man? Make a clean break and find something better to do with your weekends and evenings. Besides, they'll have you deployed again before you know it. **** that, not for this callsign ;)

Hah, I'm not joining the local unit, I'm going to be working in a more specialist role, rather than being surrounded by weekend warriors. I should have already transferred, but we all know what the admin is like.

Have to agree with this too. I was quite fortunate and ended up in a really good posting for the past few years, but also knew it was time to move on when I decided to leave. I picked up my Cpl after around 3 1/2 years and managed to get a posting that I really like, working doing something I loved, but you can sometimes just see things starting to change around you for the worse and at that point it's time to make the decision to go.

I prefer to move on on a high rather than being completely disillusioned, like pretty much everyone I joined with who've left already, only a few of my intake left, and they're either unhappy and looking to get out, or are unhappy and sticking with it and will be lifers.

Well, in all honesty any posting can be good. It's just down to you to make it good! :)

I hate when people don't want to go to places X Y or Z. Though when you challenge them on it, they don't give a valid answer. It's always on the lines of.." SAC Bloggs said that it's rubbish!"

Or people that constantly **** off their place of work, not only is it unprofessional.. Though it lowers morale for everyone. I find that a lot of people don't help themselves in the millitary. As long as you can make the good days out number the bad, you're on for a winner!

I'm not saying my 7 years has been perfect (7 years exactly today- GET SOME TIME IN) though it's been a bloody good ride this far, and long may it continue.

Not really, there are some dog**** places that just don't appeal, when i was younger and single I didn't care much for where I went or who with or what job but 4 tours later and now being a homeowner it comes down to location location location. I turned down the arse end of Wales to go to NI next spring as it is easier to get home on a weekend by flying than it would be driving from Brawdy.

If people are whinging then that's when you know something is wrong! I think half the issue is these days is that there is not a great deal happening in terms of workload (compared to the last 15 years) but the same level of workrate is expected after Iraq/Afghanistan and it just isn't feasible - purely because that level of tempo just doesn't exist in normal day to day running. I find myself bored during points in the week but most of us are grown up enough to say, if there's nothing going on then don't be in work - just a shame this ethos doesn't transcend through the units as much as it used to.

Crow :D

Good luck doing distance learning with your 30minutes of internet a week.:(

You can use the internet suite for an hour a day if I remember right. I was there start of 2015. Its slow but it isn't too bad.

I had intentions of learning something there, but instead I just hit the gym hard and had a good time overall.

Regarding people ****ging the raf off, our place is full of people who love a good rant but they don't have the balls to PVR. So ya can kinda just ignore them.

Must say though, the PVR rate at the minute, particularly for Lossie is pretty huge.

Was speaking to a friend the other day, apparently Odiham already has a PVR rate of 26%.

Looking to occupy myself with some sort of distance learning course for when i go to the Falklands. I have no idea what i want to do though!

Photography. I took it up just before I went (1992) and there's loads to do subject wise. There's a colony of Gentoo penguins just along the shore from Mare Harbour. Stanley has a lot of beautiful areas, old wrecks on the shore etc. And for R&R, if you go to Saunders Island there are colonies of Elephant seals.

Obviously you need to observe the restricted areas, there are still minefields everywhere.

What trade are you? The problem for myself and most of the people I know is that they are undermanned and overworked.
