More likely stewards do what they did with Ferrari. When they used banned team orders. No punishment and rule retrospectively changed for the entire season.

Then you missed it. Ted confirmed it during the race and Toto confirmed it after for Mercedes.

Their statement released afterwards only mentions that the FIA regulations didn't allow it. Nothing about asking the stewards or the FIA.
