Chalkboard being a case of "political correctness gone mad" is actually a case of "political-correctness-gone-mad gone mad".

Chalkboard was historically favoured in USA, whilst blackboard was favoured in UK. That blackboards are no longer black, and with a continuing transfer of american-english into english-english, we've moved over to chalkboard.

Actually, blackboards are still black.

It's just that the majority of educational institutions now use whiteboards/interactive whiteboards (so why aren't these called Penboards/ProjectedPixelArrayControlledByDigitisedUserInputBoards?)

These "safe spaces" the campuses keep putting up are not preparing them for life in the real world. No wonder the current generation are such flakes :/

In a few generations the 'offensive' oldies will have died off and politcal correctnesss will be in full force, you'll probably get a prison sentence for saying mankind.

We, as an institution don't, some of the very small country primary schools here still have some boards in use. It's part of general guidelines given out to students going out on teaching practice. I just laugh at it. Bonkers.

I certainly didn't get told not to call blackboards, blackboards.

So it's fine to call things white but not black, so are we airbrushing "black" out of society completely?

That's really racist... oh damn, they've ****** it.

You sure? I've not seen a black school chalkboard... probably ever. The ones at my school, in the 1990s, were all green. Generally, they all are, since they're no longer made of slate.

Yup, the blackboards at my old school were definitely black, as were the ones in the storage rooms at the college I used to work at. It may surprise the current generation to learn that they were actually called blackboards because of their colour, not because racist :p

It saddens me that everywhere have to be a 'safe place' these days for the terminally offended, while the rest of us are stepping on eggshells.

Thankfully where I work though, my manager likes South Park, so we do get a bit of office banter without triggering anyone :p

P.S. I've read that DM article now.

I have a couple of disabilities myself, and the article says that the disabled should be referred to as 'people with disability'. Good grief... really? :rolleyes: I'm fine with just being referred to as disabled.

Get on with life!

This is just awful. Frankly I don't understand this. I just got torn to shreds on another forum I post on. Am I offended? Not really. I can take attacks without killing myself in shame and I do admittedly post some stupid stuff at times so I kind of deserve it. Although when I was at University there were some pretty crazy people there. I tried not to associate myself with them but it didn't stop them trying to recruit me to the socialist / communist party.

Agreed. I have a disability myself and have never had a problem with being called disabled. One thing that makes me laugh is that health care professionals call me a "client" rather than a "patient". I mean why? Surely they effectively mean the same thing when talking about people using the NHS?

Wasn't it O'Brien in 1984 who commented about how if you can control language, you can control people?

Absolutely.

Instead of desensitising people to words they are trying to sensitise them instead. A man who likes man is definitively a homosexual. And now "homosexual" has been redefined as offensive? What a ****ing disaster. As a man who likes woman that's akin to me being told to feel offended for being heterosexual lol.

In 20 years time we probably won't be able to call women women. We'll have to call them alternative males or some such rubbish because calling them women would be sexist.

This is definitely the biggest problem facing Britain today, so well done to Cardiff Met :rolleyes:. Here are a selection of offensive words/phrases and their approved alternatives

Best man for the job = Best person for the job
Waitress = server
Fireman = firefighter
Housewife = consumer ( :confused: )
Mankind = humanity
Christian name = forename
Homosexual = same-sex
Polio victim = Polio survivor
Sportsmanship = fairness
Workmanlike = efficient.

How do they limit and enforce this 'ban'?
