Broken Britain

My parents are in Christchurch and they were wanting to move back. They struggled to sell their place in NZ so it's on hold at the moment.

I wasn't keen on the move, access to decent healthcare being the main concern for them. The quality of living is better in NZ too.

I remember us speaking about it a year or so ago. They're in West Melton iirc? I'm just outside Lincoln. Houses are still getting snapped up here very quickly. Very diserable area being 20min from Christchurch. Same with West Melton. Brits seem to congregate in these two areas.

We're potentially looking at renting out our place (or selling) so we can always come back if the move don't pan out.

Id do anything to move from the UK to NZ

Username states otherwise? :p

You would be stunned if you knew how many Brits move back. Anecdotally I know of at least 10 different couples/families leaving here to go back. All wealthy people too. Great place to live, but, not a patch on the British countryside and London.

My folks and family in the UK is all scattered around Devon and Oxford, and the only complaints I hear about seems to be the price of electricity. They seem to be ok about everything else.

Yeah they're in West Melton but their place is 15 acres and huge, it's a lot of work and I think that puts quite a lot of people off. West Melton has grown a lot though over recent years with some reasonable amenities going in so I'm sure they'll be able to move it on eventually.

NZ isn't really all its cracked up to be. Like everywhere, it has serious issue. Have family who moved over there about 25 years ago and they came back recently and it was interesting talking to them because NZ is still the lefties darling country. Funny how they are also super hot on immigration as well...

Beautiful country but not the utopia many seem to think it is.

It's almost as if most (all?) countries have immigrants.

My brother lives in Australia and deep down he wants to come back. Yes the UK is a dive compared to say the mid 90's to early 00's but pretty much everywhere has gone the same over the same time period.

We can all hop on a flight and go anywhere and experience vastly different culture in a few hours. In Aus/NZ you better like your holidays at home because you are not seeing anything unless extremely wealthy.

I think if you want to have a good place to live you need to look outside the box and go to developing countries.

If anything the future of the UK looks far brighter than a lot of western countries because we dumped our manufacturing and focused on services. Countries like China and India will decimate Germany over the next few decades and they still heavily rely on Russian and coal whereas we are all well on our way to a greener future.

What do you mean? I get the impression my posts don't quite come across very well to you. My point is that NZ is held up as some magical place by many people who would baulk at the idea of being super strict on immigration in this country and would consider it right wing and borderline racist yet NZ gets a pass.

NZs issues aren't mass immigration they are cost of living like so many places. When you have a completely global economy, the rich take over which is what has happened in almost every first world country. The locals are pushed out. Housing becomes a commodity with which to increase your wealth at the expense of others. Communities are destroyed because no one actually lives there. Economies turn into something designed for the wealthy and foreign rather than the indigenous people.

I was agreeing with you but also I tend to post quickly (so it probably didn't make much sense) and also generally not just regarding the quoted post but taking into consideration of other comments in the thread.

Wouldn’t say that it gets a pass. The average Kiwi appears to be increasingly against mass immigration, and even the Reddit yokels over at the NZ sub is now against it. Funny how a bit of economic headwind can make even the most leftwing person turn on a dime.

I’ve only been here 10 years, but in that time the house prices went from laughable to completely insane. I always say that I would love to see the bank account of your average-earning person here. It must be a miserable life.

Here you’re either rich, or you probably want to leave and go try your luck elsewhere. It’s not a perfect enough place to be struggling in. If you’re wealthy enough, you swat any and every annoyance out of the way with a hammer of cash.

I have literally known, what we would class as 3rd world citizens, to leave NZ and head back to places like Zimbabwe. Rather middle-class there than poor and shivering here they say.

Unless you have a really crappy life in the UK or have some sort of massive stiffy for NZ, I’d stay put at the moment.
