Bruce Lee vs Modern Martial Arts

The ability to take a punch is largely determined by the sternocleidomastoids. These are paired muscles ie one on each side of the neck. Naturally the larger the person the stronger, on average, that muscle will be. That along with a slightly bigger and heavier skull means less skull movement -> less brain rattling -> less chance of knockout.

The other thing to remember is when you say take a frontal hit eg jab or cross then both the sternocleidomastoid muscles will absorb the blow - spreading the received energy. However, if you get a glancing hit or say a hook then the full force of the blow is going to be expended onto the one muscle therefore reducing the chance of the blow being cushioned and increasing the chance of a knockout. If you get hit on the chin then that provides leverage to worsen the situation etc.

I wonder who has stronger kneck muscles f1 drivers or boxers.

I know f1 drivers actually workout there kneck muscles because of the gforces they pull in the corners and they can be racing for over one and a half hours and testing for a whole day

you need the whole package strength courage will to fight.

this is why you see great technical people do good but when its a brawl or long fight often the heart or the will to win that takes over.

bigger people will obviously if built take a punch better than a smaller person.

this is why you dont see ten stone boxers with a 15 stone or twenty stone boxer because 99 percent will just be destroyed instantly.

smaller can do well against maybe less skilled opponents but if the skill was like for like then obviously mass will take a win as the power being given is greater.

as said at his weight he would do probably well at most fighting as he was professional about it and lived it but also enjoyed fighting people.

if he would fight people with real power and skill like tyson in prime or even a bare knuckle boxer of decent standard they would literally kill him.

someone whos big bear type of person would get kicked to hell then just grab him and smash the living daylights out of him

Well i seen a lot of MMA, i believe most of the fighters will not have a chance...do not get me wrong they are good at what they do but in our lifetime we never will see a person like Bruce probably.People can say he was all show and all that doing his films but many martial artists are like that now yet some are still extremely good like Jet Li/Tony Jaa/Jackie Chan/Hwang Jang Lee...it's a bit of a daft arguement anyway as things are entirely different now.

One thing for sure though with the power and speed Bruce hit....it's ridiculously high for his size which was very impressive back then.

Key being for his size, although I remember Prince Naseem Hamed once saying in a interview it only takes something like 5lbs (cant remember number but was only small) of pressure to the chin to knockout any human being.

So wouldn't be hard to imagine Bruce whooping people twice his size, especially if they are untrained.

More freakishly I have a bit of a morbid fascination imaging what would happen if you threw a prime Tyson in against a bear or gorilla? Obviously claws not allowed and no biting. Do you think Tyson would have enough power to knockout either?

you know a gorilla can tear a man in half like its a twig right?
Imagine this with a gorrilla
Now imagine the sumo wrestlers arms being ripped from there sockets.

Now imagine mike tyson trying to fight one

your only as hard as your weakest point

spark anyone hard enough in the jaw/temple they gonna drop no matter how big they are

Hard enough being the operative word. Hard enough can often me harder than said person can actually hit.

Also, people don't seem to understand that speed doesn't mean much by itself without the mass behind it.

You know, force = speed x mass. Out of two objects moving at the same speed, the one with greater mass is going to be carrying the greater force.

Bigger heavier people have typically, bigger heavier arms, which will typically result in more force from a punch.

There's a reason why weight brackets exist.

I think that a little exaggerated and dependent on the human being.

Seriously though a gorilla or a bear are only flesh and bones like us, sure their skulls would be thicker and have much stronger necks but surely a full power punch from Tyson, bare knuckles and all would be enough to knock them out?

Yeah but does it lift? ;)

just over 2000kg according to the video I linked ;)

dood if they can lift 2000kg that can easily tear a man in half.

I'm sure they are used to hitting each other a lot harder than tyson could hit them.

I'd imagine their jaws are different than ours to and not so easily dislocated etc like our puny ones

BTW

"I paid a worker at New York's zoo to re-open it just for me and Robin. When we got to the gorilla cage there was 1 big silverback gorilla there just bullying all the other gorillas. They were so powerful but their eyes were like an innocent infant. I offered the attendant $10,000 to open the cage and let smash that silverback's snotbox! He declined."

I'll trade you the daily mail.

Assuming he could hit, and get close enough and get his full force, I doubt he could knockout the Gorilla.
