Bruce Lee vs Modern Martial Arts

Seems unlikely - a professional boxer tops out around 1200-1300lbs of impact force IIRC and a gorilla starts at about that (and they don't knock each other out easily).

Are you sure 1200-1300lbs

sure ive read somewhere it was 1800lbs+

Yep defo more, heck rampage Jackson did more LBS than that and he's a light heavy, non pro boxer!

I think that a little exaggerated and dependent on the human being.

Seriously though a gorilla or a bear are only flesh and bones like us, sure their skulls would be thicker and have much stronger necks but surely a full power punch from Tyson, bare knuckles and all would be enough to knock them out?

You can actually punch harder with gloves on as they protect your hands from damage. One of the reasons bare knuckle fights would go on for a very long time was that the fighters were damaging their hands and unable to punch with full power.

As to tying to knock out a gorilla, I think a punch from Tyson would probably feel like not much more than a playful slap from another adult gorilla.:D

Gloves do soften the blows a lot though, they do protect the hands of course but they will be absorbing force.

Lee might have been, and probably was, one of the greatest marshal artists to ever live.

However he was not a fighter, at best he was a performer. Comparing him to someone who fights for a living and has perfected their ability purely to fight other people into submission, is ridiculous.

He is one of those figures who has been turned into something more than real, which I feel takes away from his actual accomplishments.

Saying that however, at his peak against someone in his weight class? Yeah he would probably destroy them. His real strength lay within his size compared to his power, remember he weighed less than 11st and was only 5'7. Put him against someone like Tyson

erm

In the 1958 Hong Kong Inter-School Amateur Boxing Championships, Lee trounced three-time British titlist Gary Elms by a third round knockout.
.

and you know he was known for getting into street fights with rival gangs?
ability purely to fight other people into submission,
You know the martial arts style he created and what it was intended to do right?

anyway repost
1:50 ,5:40 and especially 7:15

His "fighting history" is almost impossible to actually prove, nearly everything is anecdotal and if you look at 3 sources you will get 3 completely different stories. The actual records of these events are basically non existent.

and you know he was known for getting into street fights with rival gangs?

Did he then save a the Emperor's daughter whilst riding a dragon? Sorry but that sentence just sounds ridiculous.

Look, I agree he was an incredible individual, but this deification of him as sort of magical super human are frankly a bit ridiculous.

Bruce Lee was technically the first MMA fighter on the screen, but that doesn't mean he'd beat modern fighters. Jeet Kune Do is basically MMA, and think about how badly the fighters of today would beat the ones from the late nineties, badly. 40-60 years ago? Destruction.

I always like the martial arts/MMA/etc debates. One of the very first "MMA" style fights, was an exhibition match between Muhammad Ali and Antonio Inoki (Japanese wrestling legend and skilled martial artist), it was billed as an absolute must not miss epic but the actual fight is best described as a farce. It wasn't until the 11th hour when the Ali camp actually bothered to do some scouting on their opponent that they realised Ali was in way over his head and was about to received one of the biggest butt kickings in history on international television lol. They managed to get some extra rules thrown in last minute (under threat of Ali not showing up) including Inoki being banned from "attacking with feet" unless one of his knees was on the ground, lmao. In the end even with the deck stacked Inoki was able to fight to a draw.

More freakishly I have a bit of a morbid fascination imaging what would happen if you threw a prime Tyson in against a bear or gorilla? Obviously claws not allowed and no biting. Do you think Tyson would have enough power to knockout either?

You'd shatter your hand and barely effect the animals. I'd bet that if Tyson walked up to a calm, tame Bear/Gorilla and gave it the hardest, most wound-up punch he can physically throw he'd shatter his hand completely and the animals would barely even react, if at all.

Size for size, who knows - it's almost impossible to speculate. I think he would have handled himself very well. Against some of the huger beasts we see in MMA, he would likely get pummelled.
