BT Infinity & FTTx Discussion

I wouldn't read into TBB ping graphs other than as a way of identifying peak time congestion. They are ping packets, they are low priority. If you have issues that you can observe on your connection such as problems with real-time traffic then you need a router that can do proper QoS or to tweak your current settings.

If that was congestion you'd see the blue area getting fatter. If you're seeing issues pushing data through a VPN then try bypassing the Sky router which is probably choking.

My Aquiss connection from today which has been in heavy use:

Are you using QoS? That's remarkably flat, were you downloading at line rate?

Just to confirm if Openreach do a full fibre install, they place new modem in the premises, and this connects to a smart hub 2 via the red WAN cable doesn't it?
You need the smart hub with the red options for FTTP, yes?

If an underground install option is selected, will the dig team dig across an entire lawn to place the cable?

I'm seeing a lot of roadwork plans in my area pop up on bidb.uk, where Openreach are replacing almost a dozen (so far planned) poles in my town over the next few months. At least 2 of them are providing poles rather than being worded to replace too.

Also 2 other planned works have the below works description which I'm unsure if it has any relevance or meaning? I'm curious if this is preliminary work before FTTP is planned for the town? Or something else entirely? Last I saw our town is planned for between Apr 2021-24...

Road closure required to provide safe access for engineer to carry out periodic safety check on Openreach telegraph pole located in the verge.
Traffic management required for a safe area for pole testing

I'm not too fussed if they aren't, as we have MS3 (altnet fibre) laying right now in my area, plus we have VM Gig1 which I'm on currently. But I am curious whether Openreach are suddenly going to deploy all over town their own FTTP or not next year potentially.

A new ONT goes on the wall and hands off on an RJ45 port.

There's no selecting an underground install, the install follows whatever method is being used in your area. If your phone line comes in overhead on a pole then that's how the fibre comes in. If your line is ducted underground then that duct is used.

Openreach are actually quite good at digging up to clear it. I think they'd be well within their rights to request that you at least dig the duct up yourself if it's on your property.

Ducts don't tend to collapse by themselves though, if it's the final bit of pipe leading into your house under your garden then there's not really many opportunities for it to get damaged.

Indeed, was a bit of a tongue in cheek remark. Ours needed a bit of TLC, the ducting ran about 20-25 metres down the street, and as you say it was the last part under the garden that the OR engineer had some trouble with, he originally thought it was blocked. Bear in mind this was on a new build, thankfully it ended up being a few stones/build up of mud that was blocking it which he was able to get the pole through to pull the rope through.
