BT Infinity & FTTx Discussion

I would imagine if Openreach publish anything more precise then you'll get people trying to sue them because they moved house expecting FTTP to arrive within three months and it got delayed. Also it's fairly commercially sensitive information.

Even if it is vague about the future I'd expect it to reflect the present. It was March OR emailed me to say FTTP was available yet this is not shown on the map. Maybe I'm in too small an area for it to show?

Well it says the area is being built between 2021 and 2026, and you went live during that time period. It's not gone green because the area build isn't complete.

Blast. Looking at moving to a new property, and it doesn't have FTTP :-(

I've got 3 FTTP providers where I am: VM, BT and City Fibre.

Most annoyingly, is that the housing estate (built in 2017) is in a little gap of no availability - roads on the left do, roads on the right do, but not the estate.

A house on the main road by the entrance to the estate has it too :-(

Unless it was a dream/forever home, I'd stay put. Appreciate that might not be possible.

It's a rental, and good properties are hard to come by in this area.

This particular property ticks every box, other than broadband and type.

Bigger rooms, bigger garden, driveway for 2 cars, solar panels and more efficient and generally much newer home for £250 a month more. Plus it's closer to work, which is currently 1hr 30 drive.

Only downside is it's a semi, not detached, and poor internet availability.

Ok, but would there be any advantage in switching to it from 1GB Virgin? The speeds suggest I wouldn’t notice any difference
A few reasons off the top of my head:
  • Openreach FTTP is superior technology compared to VM
  • Higher upload speeds
  • Lower latency and jitter
  • Very small risk of congestion
  • You can choose whichever ISP you want (provided they resell FTTP)
  • Choose a decent provider and you won't have to deal with the atrocious VM call centres

Out of sheer curiosity... the cable from the ONT going out through the wall, as it passes below the double plug socket and extension cables. Can that cause any electrical interference at all? Do people have their ONT/cable going anywhere near plug sockets? Or is it far away as possible?
